QC Newsletter November 2010 - Certified Carpet Cleaner

What is a “Certified” Carpet Cleaner?

When shopping for carpet cleaning, you may have noticed the word “certified” being used in advertising. You may have seen a logo being used to feature certification. What does this mean to you as a client? Would you be surprised to learn that most carpet cleaning companies have no formal training? That they are not required to be licensed? That there is no requirement to have any certification whatsoever? Is training and certification important? After all, isn’t carpet cleaning a “menial” task that anyone can perform?

Actually, a carpet cleaning professional is working with one of your most valuable assets. Should it be trusted with just anyone? Unfortunately, our industry is full of “rogues” that only care about how much money they can get from you and nothing about the life of your carpeting. They do not care about the industry in which they work.

Have you ever notice that in many states, air conditioning companies, plumbers, and pest control companies are required to be licensed? Not so for carpet cleaners. Fortunately for you, and for me, there are many fine people in the carpet cleaning industry that realize the standard must be raised. Those's of us in that process help to police our own industry. In order to do this, associations and Certification organizations were created. One such organization is called the IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification). This organization provides certification courses and exams for the carpet cleaning industry. By attending these courses, carpet cleaners are taught about fiber identification, carpet construction, cleaning chemistry, cleaning methods and professionalism.

These valuable concepts equip them to choose the proper procedures for cleaning your carpet. The certified firm is on the cutting edge of technology and change in our industry. A certified firm knows the right way to apply cleaning procedures and chemistry. A certified firm is working together with other certified firms to raise the standard of carpet cleaning in general, therefore providing you with a higher quality product.

NOTE: Never use a carpet cleaning company that is not certified by the IICRC! This may void the warranty on your carpet!

QC Newsletter Sept 2010 - Top Terrible Stains!

Removing the Top Ten Terrible Stains with Household Items

Blood - You should rinse quickly with cool water. Follow with an approved cleaning solution or a mix of ¼ teaspoon clear (non-bleach, non-lanolin) dishwashing liquid with one cup cool water. Blot and dry quickly.

Dye and Food Stains - Such as beverages, medicines, cosmetics, foods and other liquids containing dyes should be absorbed first. Then try the liquid dishwashing solution describe in the blood remedy. Blot, repeat and rinse with clear water on a clean, white towel or white paper towel. Dry.

Fingernail polish - This can can removed using a non-acetone fingernail polish remover. Apply a small amount of the remover on a white cloth and work it in from the edges of the spill to the center. Blot the area using lukewarm tap water. Dry with a clean cloth.

Ink - (ballpoint pen) Apply 70% isopropyl rubbing alcohol to a cloth or paper towel. Don’t pour rubbing alcohol directly on the spot.

Paint - Latex responds to the detergent solution described in the blood remedy. Blot, repeat and dry.

Urine or vomit - If left unattended it can damage carpet in several ways. Always clean these up immediately with paper towels. For pet urine, try a solution of one part white vinegar and one part water. Blot with towel, repeat.

Rust - Almost always requires professional services because of the chemical involved.

Wax - (paraffin from candles) Responds best when medium heat from an iron is applied to a clean white cloth or paper towel, which is place over the wax spill. Repeat the heat application to the towel as the wax is absorbed. Sometime dyes in wax won’t come out and fibers will have to be cut and the area replaced with a new carpet insert.

Wine - Comes out with the same dishwashing detergent solution found in the blood remedy. Blot, repeat and dry.

QC Newsletter August 2010 - What's the Best Carpet Cleaning Method?

What’s the Best Carpet Cleaning Method?

Should you go “dry” or “steam” Is one method better than the other? Are these even the right terms?

This article will give you an overview of the 4 methods of carpet cleaning that are approved by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), the world’s most recognized body of certification for carpet and upholstery cleaners.

Method #1: Hot Water Extraction: Otherwise known as “steam cleaning”, hot water extraction is the process that most are probably familiar with. Hot water extraction is the correct technical term, not steam cleaning. Actual steam is not used at all. A hot water solution is produced and immediately recovered, creating a “flushing” action on the carpet.

However, the biggest and most important difference is in the person cleaning the carpet. A trained technician will know what pressure to use, what cleaning products to use, how to get maximum soil removal and maximum spot removal without over-wetting the carpet or leaving a sticky residue behind. The horror stories of carpet being wet for days is due to operator error, not because “steam” or “hot water extraction” caused it.

Method #2: Absorbent Pad: Also known as bonnet cleaning, this method employs a round pad that spins across the surface of the carpet, absorbing the soil. A solution is applied to the carpet or the pad to aid in releasing soils. This is a method that some may classify as “dry cleaning”. Although, water based products are used in almost all “dry cleaning” systems, therefore the term dry cleaning is not technical and would not be desired. Absorbent pad cleaning is not a deep cleaning method. It should only be used in lightly soiled situations.

Method #3: Dry Compound: This method uses a powder that has been treated with detergents, water and solvents. The powder compound is sprinkled onto the carpet, a brush with cylindrical bristles is used to work the powder into the carpet pile. The solution that is in the powder releases the soil. The soil is then absorbed into the absorbent powder. This method should only be used in lightly soiled and maintenance situations.

Method #4: Shampoo or Dry Foam: In this method, a shampoo or foam is generated and worked into the carpet with a rotary brush or cylindrical brush machine. The shampoo or foam releases the soil. The soil is then vacuumed with the machine or allowed to dry and removed with a conventional vacuum cleaner. This method should be used in only lightly soiled situations and maintenance cleaning. When using shampoo, great care should be taken to avoid leaving a sticky residue on the carpet.

QC Newsletter August 2010 - Run Spot, Run!

Run Spot, Run!

What should you do when your pet “goes on the carpet”? Are puppy puddles putting you in a particular predicament? Well, not to worry, that’s what we are here for.

First of all, if you have a pet that is prone to urinate on the carpet, take a quick walk through your home each day when you get home. The quicker you get to a pet stain the better.

Some technical tips on urine: When urine is first excreted, it is on the acid side of the pH scale and very easily removed. Within hours of being exposed to oxygen it turns to an alkaline pH. When this happens it will continue to increase in alkalinity to the point of becoming practically ammonia. This explains the ammonia like odor.

To clean the urine spot: Mix 1 part white vinegar to 2 parts water and clean with a white terry towel. If you have a small extraction machine, it would be ideal to use it.

Thanks to Marcus at The Service Department in Wilsonville.

I needed a power cord for my laptop and decided to order online after visiting a local retailer that wanted around $80 for it. After getting a magnifying glass and reading the numbers that I would say are an equivalent of size 5 font, I ordered a power cord. Upon receiving it, I opened the package only to find that the tip that plugs into the laptop was the wrong size! THE WRONG SIZE!

I attended an AM Networking meeting and saw Marcus and told him my story. He politely said that he could get me one for $30. Sold! I took my broken one to him and a few days later it was in. I went to pick it up on SUNDAY, yes he’s open on Sunday and got my new power cord.

So if you have computer repairs, upgrades, need networking assistance or parts, save yourself time and frustration. Call The Service Department at 503-682-2682.

Entry ways are often the most heavily soiled areas of carpet in the home. The simplest yet most effective step in keeping these high traffic areas from becoming heavily soiled is to use entry mats.

QC Newsletter July 2010 - The Importance of Carpet Cleaning

The Importance of Carpet Cleaning

Carpet cleaning is important! Carpet is a major investment in your home. Regular carpet cleaning’s are important to keep it looking good. Just as the clothes we wear need regular washing to keep them fresh and hygienic, carpets also require periodic professional cleaning. When accumulated soil builds up they become major causes of reduced carpet life.

Carpet and upholstery cleaning costs are minimal when you consider the replacement cost of carpets and furniture, so regular cleanings make economic sense too.

The following helpful hints can stop dirt in its tracks.

* Use mats - Outdoor and indoor mats or runners can reduce the amount of dirt that enters the house.
* Take off your shoes - You can save wear and tear on carpet by asking everyone to take off his or her shoes before entering your home.

QC Newsletter March 2010 - Spring into Cleaning

Spring into Cleaning

With April showers and May flowers come dust and pollen that can
leave your home in desperate need of a seasonal makeover. Spring
cleaning may not be one’s idea of fun in the sun, but the Institute of
Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) has a
few tips to make cleaning a breeze.

* HVAC filters - Use quality electrostatic filters that attract particles to the filter. To keep filters in top shape, clean once per month.

* Control moisture and humidity - Maintaining humidity at 50% or below prevents the growth of mold and the infestation of dust mites; two of the most common allergens.

* Increase vacuum frequency - Since about 75% of carpet soil is dry
particulate, vacuuming more often prevents soil from embedding deep
into carpets. Vacuum heavy-traffic areas slowly and repeatedly.

* Use high efficiency filter bags - High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) double-lined vacuum filter bags filter out 99% of particles that cause respiratory irritation.

* For professional cleaning jobs, look for an IICRC-Certified Firm.
Confirm their technician’s training and certification in the type of work
to be performed and always obtain a written estimate.

Curry’s Landing Restaurant - the name may indicate to some that this establishment serves East Indian cuisine. But no, not so. Curry’s Landing serves bistro cuisine, including breakfast, lunch and dinner. No spicy, curry infused dishes here. It is traditional American-style cooking to order. In fact, the name Curry’s Landing owes nothing to fragrant spices of the East and owes much to a historic pioneer from Oregon’s rich past.

Established in December 2007, providing a comfortable environment and a social gathering place for all people in the greater Wilsonville/Charbonneau community. Also, they welcome business and professional group participation with business luncheons, group dinners or specialty meetings.

Bill Grier, Cindy Grier and Lexi (daughter) run this family restaurant. If you find that no matter how much you vacuum, your carpet still does not look like it used to, it may be time for deep cleaning. While there are do-it-yourself cleaning methods on the market, hiring a professional is the safest, fastest and easiest option. To keep your carpet at peak performance, CRI (Carpet and Rug Institute) recommends professionally deep cleaning your carpet every 12 to 18 months. (Be sure to check your carpet warranty for particular requirements.) One source for finding a professional cleaning company in your area is the Institute of Inspeciation, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) at www.certifiedcleaners.org.

When looking for a cleaning professional, take these cautions to heart:

Be careful of any company that contacts you by phone or that advertises a cleaning price by the room. Room sizes vary and charges should be based on the total area cleaned.

The use of brand name cleaning products does not necessarily suggest an affiliation with those companies or added credibility for the cleaning service. Make sure that you select a cleaning
professional with certification from an organization that certifies professionals.

Ask good questions. Do not be afraid to ask questions! Here are a few questions to keep in mind:

“How long have you been in business?”
The answer can speak volumes about a company’s reputation and experience.

“What formal training is required for the company’s cleaning technicians?
A reputable company should require employees receive training certifications.”

“Do you vacuum before deep cleaning the carpet?”
All professional cleaners should vacuum before they deep clean the carpet. This critical first step makes a huge difference in the end result.

“Do you use Seal of Approval cleaning solutions and equipment?”
Seal of Approval products have been independently tested and certified to effectively clean carpet without causing any damage.

Get an in-home inspection and estimate

Never go strictly by television advertisements or newspaper inserts or jump at the lowest bid. DON”T accept quotes over the phone!

Have the cleaning representative come to your home for an inspection to determine the type of cleaning method that is most suitable, as well as to inspect your carpet for problem spots or extremely soiled areas. Obtain a written agreement before any work is done. Usually they will not charge for furniture removal, routine spot removal or preconditioning. Make sure your are not charged for any extras. Get a written contract with the total price and statements of guarantees that the clean company offers. For more information visit, www.carpet-rug.org

QC Newsletter March 2010 - Three Keys to Successful Spot Cleaning

Three Keys to Successful Spot Cleaning

Here are a few things to keep in mind when spotting your own carpet:

1. All spots are not created equal. All spots should not be cleaned with the same product. For example, urine spots that are dried should be cleaned with an “acid side” spotter due to the fact that the pH of urine changes with hours of drying. Oil or grease spots require a solvent-based spotter and do-it yourself traffic area cleaning is best approached with a dry compound material, leaving just food and general spots for the general spotter.

2. Using the wrong product can actually cause a permanent stain. Many over-the-counter products are high in alkaline content and can actually “set” the stain. In addition, some tend to leave heavy residues that cause spots to re-soil quickly.

3. Spot cleaning is not a substitute for professional traffic area cleaning. Leaving traffic areas without professional attention for long periods of time will allow abrasive soils to damage carpet beyond repair. If you don’t know how long it’s been since you have cleaned your carpets, then it’s time!

QC Newsletter February 2010 - Beware of Bait and Switch Carpet Cleaners

Beware of Bait and Switch Carpet Cleaners! You know the type – they “bait” you with a low price, then “switch” you to their “dual scrub” or “deep clean” system. They proceed to soak your carpet and leave a soapy residue behind.
>>>>>> Good luck getting them back again!<<<<<<

Beware of low priced carpet cleaning. If their price is truly low, you should be concerned about their quality. How can you pay technicians a decent wage and have the best products and equipment at the lowest price? You can’t.

“This is Bubba. The world’s most notorious carpet cleaner!”

Some companies advertise a low price, then charge you more when they get there. Be clear about what is included and what is not. In this ad, the fine print says “we recommend our dual scrub method for all heavily soiled carpet”. How many carpets are heavily soiled? All of them! Even if you held them to the “$34.95”, you would get a very poor cleaning.

A low priced carpet cleaning company simply cannot provide the most advanced, guaranteed cleaning technology at a low, low price. Something has to be cut from their service.

Our Company obviously offers all of these benefits and more.

Tualatin Express Office Offers Hope for Job Seekers Survey Finds 61% Say No New Jobs Coming, Express Offers Options

Tualatin, OR February, 2010 – The economic stimulus recovery package continues to stir up debate and discussion – especially about one hot topic: job creation. A new survey released by local staffing firm Express Employment Professionals reveals how workers feel about the topic.

A recent online poll conducted by Express found that 61% of workers are not optimistic that more jobs will be created in the next six months.

“Today’s workers face the realities of a very difficult job market, and it’s unprecedented in the careers of many, especially those who are new to the workforce,” said Franchisee’s Robert Knight, Tualatin, OR Express franchisee.

“The good news is, in the past, we have made it through difficult unemployment rates and bounced back strong. At Express, we are proud to continue to provide both temporary and permanent employment to workers in this community to help them thrive in difficult times like these,” said Robert Knight.

Express offers the following tips for job seekers feeling overwhelmed by the current job market:

– Be optimistic. Optimism is a key factor to a successful job search. So, choose a positive attitude when it comes to every aspect of your search.

– Sell your skills. A new report by CareerBuilder showed that 69% of hiring managers are open to hiring someone who has transferable skills but no experience in the field. So, apply for jobs outside your area of expertise and focus on how you can use the skills you have to thrive in any position.

– Treat your job search like a full-time job. Until you find employment, make it your “job” to find one. Apply your skills, focus and dedication to the job search itself.

The Tualatin, office, located at 19407 SW Martinazzi Avenue , is currently taking applications. Businesses seeking employees may stop by the office, call 503.612.1800, or visit the Express Web site at www.expresspros.com.

Worldwide, Express Employment Professionals employs 350,000 people each year, with nearly 600 offices in four countries. Express provides expertise in evaluation hire, temporary staffing, professional search and human resources.

QC Newsletter January 2010 - Carpet Tip of the Month

Carpet Tip of the Month

Entry ways are often the most heavily soiled areas of carpet in the home. The simplest yet most effective step in keeping these high traffic areas from becoming heavily soiled is to use entry mats.

Entry mats will remove most soil that would otherwise get tracked onto your carpet, but it is important to vacuum them frequently in order for them to remain effective.

QC Newsletter January 2010 - My New Year's Resolution

MY NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION: TAKE BETTER CARE OF MY CARPET

With the new year comes new resolutions. Have you felt like you have neglected your carpet? Maybe even felt a little guilty? After all, you wouldn’t drive your car for 100,000 miles without changing the oil, would you? Of course not. Just like your automobile, your carpets and upholstery represent a significant investment. To keep your carpet and upholstery “tuned-up”, simply follow these 5 vital steps…

1. Check my Warranty. Copies of specific warranties on your carpet purchase may be available from your carpet retailer. Stain resist warranties can vary from 5 to 20 years.

ALL STAIN RESIST WARRANTIES REQUIRE REGULAR CLEANING AND IMMEDIATE SPOT REMOVAL.

2. Vacuum, Vacuum, Vacuum! It is said that the three most important rules for maintaining carpet are vacuum, vacuum, vacuum. Vacuum your carpet often. Once or twice a week at least. Vacuuming removes the sharp soil that can cut and slice the fiber causing premature wear. Much of this soil is not visible to the eye. Remove any loose particles such as loose food, leaves, pieces of crayon, bugs, etc. These items can cause spots on your carpet.

3. Have my Carpet Professionally Cleaned. Professional cleaning by a professional, certified firm should be done at least every 12 months according to DuPont and major carpet manufacturers. Heavy traffic areas may need it more often. Manufacturers warranties require professional cleaning at 12-24 months to retain texture retention warranties.

Rule of thumb: Clean your carpet before it looks dirty.

4. Remove Spots Immediately. Spots that are not immediately removed can turn into permanent stains very easily. Always use a spot cleaner that is recommended by the carpet manufacturer or your trained, certified professional cleaner! Many “over the counter” spotters leave too much soap residue that leaves a sticky residue behind that will make your spots return!

5. Have Carpet Protector Re-Applied. The soil resistor that is built into stain resistant nylon carpet is removed with regular foot traffic and harsh cleaners. To keep your carpet cleaner longer, have your protector reapplied each time you have your carpet professionally cleaned.

QC Newsletter January 2010 - The Dangers of Benzoyl Peroxide

The Dangers of Benzoyl Peroxide to Your Carpet and Upholstery!

Beware of benzoyl peroxide! It is a common ingredient in many types of acne medication and is often mixed into lotions, creams and soaps. It is one of the most common cases for mystery discoloration. Teenager especially will apply the medication to their faces and then not wash their hands, or not wash them well enough. Then, when they sit in front of the television and lean on their hands, the medication gets on to the fibers and causes discoloration. Sometimes you may see a hand print, or even a footprint. Athlete’s foot medication also contains benzoyl peroxide.

The stain may not appear until the carpet of fabric is wet cleaned. This is a permanent form of color loss that cannot be removed!

QC Newsletter December 2009 - Home Emergency Kit

Preparing a Home Emergency Kit

General Guidelines for Preparing Your Kit

Your Kit should enable you to take care of yourself and your family for a minimum of 3 full days (72 hours) but preferably for 7 full days. Your kit should be packed in a storage container that is easy for you to find and take with you should you be forced to leave home if an emergency occurs. You may or may not be able to drive your vehicle in an emergency, so consider using a container (a bin or duffel bag) that has wheels so you can pull it behind you, because your kit will likely be quite heavy.

Think in terms of the basic of survival - food, clothing, and shelter when putting your kit together. Of course, it’s difficult to take shelter with you but if you have a very light and compact tent, then you can certainly include it.

Basic Supply List - Must have items

  • Drinking Water (min of 2 liters per person per day)
  • Washing/Cooking Water ( 2 liters per person per day)
  • Food - Pack foods that require little or no water to prepare and that require no refrigeration or cooking. Good choices are packages of dried fruits and nuts and canned foods that can be eaten right out of the cans. Think lightweight because if you are forced to leave your home, you must take your emergency kit with you. You may of course be stranded or confined to your home in an emergency, so in your pantry or basement you can store several days or even weeks worth of canned and freeze dried items. Since you’re not packing them in your “to go” kit, the weight doesn’t matter.
  • Portable Cooking Appliance and Fuel
  • Plates, Cups and Cooking/Eating Utensils including a Can Opener
  • Garbage Bags
  • Paper Products (toilet paper, paper towels, etc)
  • Personal Care Items (soap, shampoo, brush or comb, toothbrush, toothpaste, antibacterial hand sanitizer, etc)
  • First Aid Kit
  • Flashlight and Extra Batteries
  • Matches and Candles
  • Extra Clothing (including rain gear)
  • Walking Shoes
  • Blankets or Sleeping Bags
  • Emergency Cash
  • Maps (of your city and state)
  • Paper and Pens
  • Copies of Important Documents/Phone Number and Addresses - If you must abandon your home and don’t have time to gather the originals, have copies packed in your emergency kit.
As the boy scout saying goes..... Be Prepared!

QC Newsletter December 2009 - How to Select A Professional Carpet Cleaning Firm

How to Select A Professional Carpet Cleaning Firm

What distinguishes one Carpet Cleaning company from another? This checklist will ensure that you have asked the right questions:

Q: Are They An IICRC Certified Firm? We are and our technicians are required to be certified also. They must attend seminar/classes to keep their certifications valid.

Q: What Kind of Experience Do They Have? We are experienced in all methods of carpet cleaning, all fabric types and carpet construction as well as the most unusual soiling conditions.

Q: What Systems Do They Use? Our company is committed to first class service systems. We carry the latest in equipment and materials to ensure the best service available.

Q: Are They Well Educated In Their Field? Most companies in our industry do not invest in educating themselves in their field. We regularly attend educational courses, certification schools, conventions, study trade journals and books related to our work. We stay on the cutting edge of technology and changes that regularly occur in our industry. Our national network of expertise is brought directly to your job site.

Q: Will You Get What You Pay For? With our company? Yes! Never select a service company based on price. Some companies would have you believe that you can get a quality service for a very low price. Their technique is to advertise a low price to get in the door, only to reveal that the low price does not include what you really need. If they do honor that low, low price. Remember that age old saying “You get what you pay for”

Q: Do They Offer Green Cleaning? Our company offers you choices of cleaning products. Green cleaning promotes health, safety and social consciousness. The green cleaning products we use focus on improving your indoor air quality, recycling and minimizing the use of raw material/products that require disposal.

Q: Are they licensed, bonded and insured? Our company holds a CCB (Contractors Construction Board) license, Tualatin business license and a Metro Business license. We have a janitorial bond and a license bond. Also, we carry liability insurance so that you can feel 100% protected against property damage or injury.

Q: Do They Guarantee Their Work? With our company all quotes are free, complete and in writing. There are no hidden costs. If you are unsatisfied we will return to your home, inspect and re-clean if needed. Your satisfaction is important to us!

Winter is Approaching Fast!

Is your home ready for the cold of winter?

There are things you can do to make sure you are!

Below are some helpful tips to help you enjoy a safe, inexpensive and warm winter season.

 Make sure your furnace is in good working order. Clean your filter, check that the pilot light and fuel source are functioning properly.

 Check the caulking around your windows. Heat loss due to cracks can cause severe heat loss, while raising your utility bill dramatically.

 Clear your gutter of leaves & branches. Trapped water will freeze in the cold, with enough build-up, could damage your gutters, roof and more.

 Make sure your chimney is free of debris. Build-up can prevent proper ventilation of smoke, as well as pose a fire danger for your home.

 Prevent your pipes from freezing and rupturing by maintaining at least a 65F degree temperature in your home, even when you're not there.

 Have your heating ducts cleaned. Its recommended that the ducts be vacuumed every 5 years.
