Happy Holidays from Quick and Clean Services, LLC

Here’s some helpful tips for spills during your holiday season

Dye and Food Stains - Beverages, medicines, cosmetics, foods and other liquids containing dyes should be absorbed first. Then try the liquid dishwashing solution described in the wine remedy. Blot, repeat and rinse with clear water on a clean, white towel or white paper towel. Dry.

Blood - Rinse blood quickly with cool water. Follow with an approved cleaning solution or a mix of ¼ teaspoon clear (non bleach non lanolin) dishwashing liquid with one cup cool water. Blot and dry quickly.

Wine - Blot with white towel. Mix ¼ teaspoon clear (non bleach non lanolin) dishwashing liquid with one cup cool water.  Blot and dry quickly.  Alternatively, you can pour salt on wine, let it absorb then vacuum.

Urine or Vomit - If left unattended it can damage carpet in several ways. Always clean these up immediately with paper towels. For pet urine/vomit, try a solution of one part white vinegar and
one part water. Blot with towel, repeat.

QC Newsletter November 2014 - What's the Best Carpet Cleaning Method?

What’s the Best Carpet Cleaning Method?

Should you go “dry” or “steam”, is one method better than the other? Are these even the right terms? This article will give you an overview of the four methods of carpet cleaning that are approved by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), the world’s most recognized body   of certification for carpet and upholstery cleaners.

Method #1: Hot Water Extraction: Otherwise known as “steam cleaning”, hot water extraction is the   process that most people are familiar with. Hot water extraction is the correct technical term, not steam cleaning. Actual steam is not used at all. A hot water solution is produced and immediately recovered, creating a “flushing” action on the carpet.

However, the biggest and most important difference is in the person cleaning the carpet. A trained       technician will know what pressure to use, what cleaning products to use, how to get maximum soil removal and maximum spot removal without over-wetting the carpet or leaving a sticky residue behind. The horror stories of carpet being wet for days is due to operator error, not because “steam” or “hot water extraction” caused it.

Method #2: Absorbent Pad: Also known as bonnet cleaning, this method employs a round pad that spins across the surface of the carpet, absorbing the soil. A solution is applied to the carpet or the pad to aid in  releasing soils. This is a method that some may classify as “dry cleaning”. Although, water based products are used in almost all “dry cleaning” systems, therefore the term dry cleaning is not technical and would     not be desired. Absorbent pad cleaning is not a deep cleaning method. It should only be used in light soiled situations.

Method #3: Dry compound: This method uses a powder that has been treated with detergents, water and solvents. The powder compound is sprinkled onto the carpet, a brush with cylindrical bristles is used to work the powder into the carpet pile. The solution that is in the powder releases the soil. The soil is then absorbed into the absorbent powder. This method should only be used in lightly soiled maintenance situations.

Method #4: Shampoo or Dry Foam: In this method, a shampoo or foam is generated and worked into the  carpet with a rotary brush or cylindrical brush machine. The shampoo or foam releases the soil. The soil is then vacuumed with the machine or allowed to dry and removed with a conventional vacuum cleaner.  This method should be used in only lightly soiled situations and maintenance cleaning. When using shampoo, great care should be taken to avoid leaving a sticky residue on the carpet.

Please note to keep your Shaw or Mohawk carpet warranties valid, you must have your carpet professionally cleaned every 12-18 months using hot water extraction and a certified firm/technician.

QC Newsletter November 2014 - Area Rug Cleaning

Area Rug Cleaning

Sixty-four percent of U.S. homeowners have rugs in their homes; found a survey by the IICRC, but only 40 percent clean them on a regular basis. Like carpets, rugs require proper maintenance to retain their appearance and durability.

Area rugs tend to be made of more delicate fibers, questionable dyes and woven constructions that can easily be damaged by do-it-yourself procedures or even professionals without adequate training and experience.

Certified technicians are trained to recognize different fibers, constructions and types of carpet and rugs, along with their potential problems. They have the equipment, training and experience to restore the beauty of carpet and rugs —  improving the look of your home or business and protecting the indoor environment, as well as your investment.

QC Newsletter September 2014 - Tips to keep your carpet in tip top shape

Let us help you keep those carpets in tip top shape with these 6 easy tips!

Tip #1 Entry Mats - Entry ways are often the most heavily soiled areas of carpet in the home.  The simplest yet most effective way in keeping these high traffic areas from becoming heavily soiled
is to use entry mats.

Tip #2 Take Off Your Shoes - You can save wear and tear on carpet by asking everyone to take off his or her shoes before entering your home.

Tip #3 Change Your Air Filters - Changing air filters in your heating and air conditioning systems as recommended by the manufacturer’s directions.  The more dust and particles removed by the filter, the less that fall on the carpet.

Tip #4 Vacuum, Vacuum, Vacuum - Increase the vacuum frequency.  Since about 75% of carpet soil is dry particulate, vacuuming more often prevents soil from embedding deep into carpets.  Vacuum heavy traffic areas slowly and repeatedly.

Tip #5 Remove Spots Immediately - Spots that are not immediately removed can turn into permanent stains very easily.  Always use a spot cleaner that is recommended by the carpet manufacturer or your trained, certified professional cleaner!  Many “over the counter” spotters leave too much soap that leaves a sticky residue behind that will make your spots return!

Tip #6 Carpet Protectant - Next time you have your carpets cleaned asked us about carpet protectant.  The soil resistor that is built into stain resistant nylon carpet is removed with regular foot traffic and harsh cleaners.  To keep your carpet cleaner longer, have protector reapplied each time you have your carpet professionally cleaned.

QC Newsletter September 2014 - Stain Removal Tips

Stain Removal Tips

Dye and food stains - Such as beverages, medicines, cosmetics, food and other liquids containing dyes should be absorbed first.  The rinse quickly with cool water, follow with an approved cleaning solution or a mix of ¼ teaspoon clean (non-bleach, non-lanolin) dishwashing liquid with one cup cool water.  Blot, repeat and rinse with clear water on a clean, white towel or white paper towel. Dry

Fingernail Polish - This can be removed using a non-acetone fingernail polish remover. Apply a small amount of the removed on a white cloth and work it from the edges of the spill to the center.  Blot the area using lukewarm tap water. Dry with a clean cloth.

Urine or Vomit - If left unattended it can damage carpet in several ways.  Always clean these up immediately with paper towels.  For pet urine, try a solution of one part white vinegar and one part water.  Blot with towel, repeat.

Wax - (paraffin from candles) Responds best when medium heat from an iron is applied to a clean white cloth or paper towel, which is placed over the wax spill.  Repeat the heat application to the towel as the wax is absorbed.  Sometimes dyes in wax won’t come out and fibers will have to be cut and the area replaced with a new carpet inset.

If the stain persists, call us at 503-638-4100 to schedule a free quote!

QC Newsletter July 2014 - Vacuuming 101

Vacuuming 101

It may come as a surprise that something as simple as regular vacuuming can also have the largest impact on the cleanliness of your home and the air you breathe. Removing loose soil while it remains on the carpet  surface prevents dirt from being tramped down into the carpet pile. Pile is the visible wear surface of carpet, consisting of yarn tufts in loop and/or cut configuration. Pile crush occurs when those tufts become matted by foot traffic. You can help prevent pile crush with proper vacuuming.

Proper vacuuming is the easiest and most effective way to keep your carpet clean.

QC Newsletter July 2014 - Containing Soil and Dust at the Front Door!

Containing Soil and Dust at the Front Door!

Ever heard the saying, “The best defense is a great offense?” Preventing dirt and grime from getting on the   carpet in the first place is a great  start for keeping it clean. The following sections give you some helpful hints that can stop dirt in its tracks.

Using Mats!

Be proactive. Use outside and inside mats or runners, which work together to reduce the amount of dirt that enters the house. Choose wisely.  If used outside, the mats should be made to withstand the sun and the rain.

Mats work best if cleaned frequently.  Vacuum up dry soil. Removed embedded soil from an outdoor mat by giving it a  shaking, followed by a good striking with a brush. Some of the vinyl or rubber type mats can be washed off with a hose or with dishwashing detergent mix in a bucket of water. Soap them up and rinse them off when you wash your car. Then lay them outside on the driveway or hang them over a porch railing to dry. Always dry your mat completely before vacuuming.

QC Newsletter June 2014 - Indoor Air Quality Carpet Vs Hardwoods!

You’ve probably heard the debate on carpets vs hardwood floors regarding allergen’s and asthma.  Check out this article regarding that very debate!

Study Shows Carpet Helps Indoor Air Quality

Dalton, GA, Jan. 8, 2014 - A series of studies funded by Shaw Industries indicates that effectively cleaned carpets can trap allergens and other particles, resulting in fewer particles  escaping into the air and thus contributing to the maintenance of indoor air quality. “These studies challenge the long held belief that carpet must adversely impact indoor air quality as it pertains to allergy and asthma sufferers,” said Dr. Bruce Mitchell, CEO of Airmid Healthgroup Limited, the independent biomedical research organization that conducted the study. “Effectively cleaned carpets have the capacity to trap allergen and microbial particles, making these particles less available to become airborne and thus maintaining indoor air quality. This makes regularly cleaned carpet a choice for families impacted by asthma and allergies.” The studies, which were presented at the annual meetings of both the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy, and Immunology (AAAAI) and the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI), evaluated several residential hardwood and carpet products. The studies aimed to determine the depth of allergen penetration in carpet, the levels of allergens found in the air and the impact of carpet cleaning on allergen removal.  Prior to  cleaning, the levels of airborne allergens, such as cat and dust mite allergens, were less for all of the carpets than the hardwood flooring, even after the carpet was repeatedly disturbed. After cleaning the carpets, a meaningful reduction in allergens occurred in the carpet and the surrounding air, Shaw said. The carpets were cleaned using the industry recommended method, which included vacuuming, cleaning with a cleaning agent, agitation, and hot water extraction.“These findings add to the existing body of research that indicates that well-maintained and    effectively cleaned carpets can be a viable choice for asthma and allergy sufferers,” said Paul Murray, vice president of sustainability and environmental affairs at Shaw.

QC Newsletter May 2014 - Now Offering Tile and Grout Cleaning

Now Offering Tile and Grout Cleaning !

There is a big controversy in the stone industry right now whether the tile actually began in Egypt, Spain or Italy.  The most versatile tile on the market is porcelain and ceramic.  These tiles can take a lot of abuse, they can handle heat, foot traffic and our very resistant to scratching.  Some tiles have a rating of 10 on the hardness scale, those tiles are used for floors and entry ways.  Most soil on the bottom of our shoes are as abrasive as 220 grit sand paper!

The grout used in between the tiles are very important.  The color you choose may show soiling very quickly.  For example, white, this color should never be used on floors because you will not be able to keep up with the cleaning.  It is almost impossible to keep it white.  The most important thing about grout is it NEEDS to be sealed.  If it isn’t sealed, it will absorb all liquids and can be permanently stained.   You can do a quick test to see if your grout needs to be sealed.  Place a couple drops of water on the grout, if it beads up your grout is sealed.  If it absorbs into the grout it needs to be resealed.  Many of the sealer manufacturers say that the sealant will last up to 10 years, rarely does it last that long.  It is recommended by the stone industry that the grout be resealed every two years.  After all, it is better to be safe then sorry. Once grout has
Absorbed a stain, it can become permanent then it has to be removed and replaced.  Not only is this costly, it is also time consuming.

Due to the grout sitting below the tile surface, cleaning can be a challenge. The best way to clean the tile and grout is to mop it, then use a shop vac to extract the water from the grout lines.  I don’t know about all of you but I don’t want to take the time to make that extra step!  I recommend using a floor steamer for cleaning your tile and grout.  You should have your tile and grout professionally cleaned every two years.  Also, that would be the best time to you to reseal the grout.

Want to see how great your tile and grout can look?  Go to Quick and Clean Services Facebook page to view video of my kitchen tile before and after the cleaning.

QC Newsletter May 2014 - 3 Reasons to Get Your Carpets Cleaned this May!

3 Reasons to Get Your Carpets Cleaned this May!

1. Your home will look beautiful! You can keep an environment your family and friends will enjoy being in.  Your carpet strongly reflects your entire home. Half of the first impression is based on the appearance of your carpet. Stain-free carpet leaves a great first impression!

2. You will save money by your carpet lasting longer!  Maintenance is always cheaper than replacement. Carpet and rug manufacturers recommend professional cleaning at least every 12 months. In fact, many carpet warranties demand professional cleaning at least every 18 months or your warranty is void. Proper cleaning helps carpet last much longer.

3. You will have a healthier home. The EPA
recommends homes with children or pets have carpet cleaned every 6-12 months.  Cleaning improve air
quality by removing pollens, mold spores, dander pollutants and soils.

QC Newletter April 2014 - Random Facts About Carpet

Random Facts About Carpet

1) The Norwalk virus or Norovirus (the virus that causes the stomach flu) can survive on an uncleaned carpet for a month or more.

2) Early Hoover vacuum cleaners were hard to sell because potential customers refused to believe (and were even insulted by the suggestion) that they could have that much dirt in their carpets.

3) Microbiologists have identified air blown from a running vacuum cleaner as one of the five places  in the home that has the highest numbers of germs. Other places include dish sponges, washing machines, bathroom toilets during a flush, and kitchen trash cans.

4) Each year, several pounds of soil can accumulate in and under a carpet.

5) A person sheds about 1.5 million skin flakes an hour, most of which becomes embedded in our carpets.

6) When properly cleaned and maintained, carpeting may improve the quality of air through trapping allergy-inducing dust and allergens. Most people, however, do not clean their carpets correctly, which can actually exacerbate allergies.

7) All carpet should be professionally cleaned a minimum of every 12 to 18 months.

8) The five-second rule is a myth: bacteria can live after four weeks on carpet.

9) To remove red wine from a carpet cover the stain with salt to let it absorb the wine. After absorbed, vacuum.

10) The swastika design has been traditionally a symbol of good fortune and can be found on carpets from America, Europe, India, and China.

QC Newsletter April 2014 - Vacuum Filters....Why are they important?

Vacuum Filters....Why are they important?

Filters are an important component to vacuums. What type of care is required to keep filters working properly?

The first step is to choose a vacuum with dependable and low maintenance filtration. This varies greatly by vacuum. Depending on the type of filtration, bagged, shakeout bag, dirt cup, HEPA, etc., most filters should be checked for blockage when the vacuum is emptied and then inspected and/or cleaned no less than monthly. Properly cleaned, working filters prevent dust from recirculating back into the cleaning area    and also prevents blockages which helps prolong the life of the vacuum. Some manufactures offer washable filters.  This is an excellent feature that can significantly reduce maintenance costs. — Larry Hartley, GM Field & Commercial Sales, Electrolux Small Appliances, and Tony Van, National Director Sales/Commercial, Electrolux Home Care Products North America, Charlotte, N.C.

There are a number of different types of filters used on upright vacuums.  Today,  most units, particularly higher-end machines, incorporate a HEPA filter cartridge to help improve Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) by capturing or retaining higher levels of particulate and dust during the vacuuming process.  Many units also have a filter or  bag indicator light, which signals to the operator that a collection bag or filter requires attention. As a general rule of thumb, HEPA filter cartridges should be changed  twice a year, if not sooner.— Jolynn Kennedy, Marketing Director, Tacony Corp, Tornado Industries, Chicago

How often should belts be replaced, bags be emptied and general maintenance be done on vacuums?

Today’s vacuum belts no longer require periodic replacement and are designed to offer much longer product life cycles than in the past. Belts today are generally manufactured with either teeth and/or ribs, and are not subject to stretching or wearing, as was the case in the past. The longevity of the vacuum belts depends on the duration of use of the vacuum each day. However, to increase your vacuum’s up-time, should    a belt happen to break, it is always a good idea to have a spare vacuum belt on-hand   for quick replacement.— Jolynn Kennedy, Marketing Director, Tacony Corp, Tornado Industries, Chicago

QC Newsletter March 2014 - Area Rug Cleaning and Upholstery Cleaning

Area Rug Cleaning

A survey by the IICRC found that 64% of U.S. homeowners have area rugs in their homes, however only 40% clean them on a regular basis.

They have     the equipment, training and experience to restore the beauty of carpet and rugs - improving the look of your home or business and protecting the indoor environment, as well as your investment.

Upholstery Cleaning

To keep your furniture clean, it's necessary to conduct routine maintenance including vacuuming and immediate attention to spills, coupled with periodic cleaning by a certified technician every one to two years. Furniture and fabric  manufacturers recommend that consumers not wait until severe soiling occurs before cleaning because the greater the soiling, the less the likelihood of restoring the fabric's original color, appearance and texture.

Regular cleaning of fabric and leather furnishings by a trained, certified technician can help restore your furniture's appearance, extend its life and keep it looking like new. Moreover, certified technicians can offer simple suggestions to maintain a clean and healthful home or business environment overall.

QC Newsletter January 2014 - Carpet Tips

Happy New Year from the staff of Quick and Clean Services. Here are some New Years carpet tips.

Tip #1 Entry Mats - Entry ways are often the most heavily soiled areas ofcarpet in the home.  The simplest yet most effective way in keeping these high traffic areas from becoming heavily soiled is to use entry mats.

Tip #2 Take Off Your Shoes - You can save wear and tear on carpet by asking everyone to take off his or her shoes before entering your home.

Tip #3 Change Your Air Filters - Changing air filters in your heating and air conditioning systems as recommended by the manufacturer's directions.  The more dust and particles removed by the filter, the less that fall on the carpet.

Tip #4 Vacuum, Vacuum, Vacuum - Increase vacuum frequency.  Since about75% of carpet soil is dry particulate, vacuuming more often prevents soil from embedding deep into carpets.  Vacuum heavy traffic areas slowly and repeatedly.

Tip #5 Remove Spots Immediately - Spots that are not immediately removedcan turn into permanent stains very easily.  Always use a spot cleaner that is recommended by the carpet manufacturer or your trained, certified professional
cleaner!

To keep your carpet cleaner longer, have protector reapplied each time you have your carpet professional cleaned.
