QC Newsletter November 2012 - Spot Removal Tips

SPOT REMOVAL TIPS

Act Quickly! Most carpet available today has been treated with a stain-resist treatment, so many spills can be removed if immediate action is taken. The longer the delay, the higher the probability of a spill becoming a permanent stain. Remember, staining is influenced by many factors, and no carpet is
completely stain proof.

Blot liquids with a dry, white, absorbent cloth or white (no printing) paper towels.

Do not scrub the area! Scrubbing can cause pile distortion in the affected area. Continue to use a dry cloth or paper towels until the area is completely dry. For semi-solids, gently scrape up with a rounded spoon. Solids should be broken up and vacuumed until completely removed.

If the spot can be identified, locate the substance in the spot removal list at www.carpet-rug.org. Go to “Residental Customers” then click on “The right cleaning products” choose “Spot Solver” on the left hand side.  Choose the stain from the list and follow the directions carefully.

Pretest any spot removal agent in an inconspicuous area to make certain the solution will not damage the fiber or the dye. After applying several drops to the testing area, hold a white cloth on the wet area for 10 seconds. Examine the carpet and cloth for color transfer, color change, or damage to the carpet. If a change occurs, another cleaning solution should be selected.

Apply a small amount of the selected cleaning solution to a white cloth, allow to sit for about 10 minutes and work in gently.

Work from the edges of the spill to the center to prevent the spill from spreading. Do not scrub! Blot, absorbing as much as possible, and repeat if necessary.

Continue using the first cleaning solution as long as there is a transfer of the spill to the cloth. It is not necessary to use all of the cleaning solutions if the first solution removes the spill. Be patient! Complete removal of the spill may require repeating the same step several times.

After the spill has been completely removed, rinse the affected area thoroughly with cold water, and blot with a dry cloth until all of the solution has been removed. Some cleaning solutions will cause rapid soiling if the solution is not completely removed. Apply a one-half inch layer of white paper towels to the affected area, and weigh down with a flat, heavy object. Continue to change paper towels as needed.

A dry, absorbent, cleaning compound may be used as a substitute to accelerate drying time.

QC Newsletters November 2012 - Three Steps for Proper Carpet Care!

THREE STEPS FOR PROPER CARPET CARE

Carpet cleaning is just like exercise!  If you get into a routine and keep it up, you will see great results and feel better for it.  Understanding the right way to clean carpet will help you save time by doing it correctly the first time with products that do the job right from the start.  Not only will CRI Seal of Approval cleaning products help keep your carpet looking great, they can also help meet the warranty requirements of the carpet manufacturer.

Below are three simple steps to keeping your carpet clean and looking great:

Vacuum, Vacuum, Vacuum.  A minimum of once weekly, twice weekly is better!

Clean spots and spills quickly with products that do not damage the carpet or cause it to re soil quicker.

Professionally deep clean your carpets every 12 to 18 months to remove embedded dirt and grime.

Quick and Clean Services always uses CRI Seal of Approval products!

QC Newsletters October 2012 - Beware of Bait and Switch Carpet Cleaner!

The holidays are almost here! Aunt Lilly and Uncle Fred coming to your house for dinner?  Do you carpets need to be freshened up?

Beware of Bait and Switch Carpet Cleaner!

You know the type - they “bait” you with a low price, then “switch” you to their “dual scrub” or “deep lean” system.  They proceed to soak your carpet and leave a soapy residue behind.

>>>>>>>Good luck getting them back again!<<<<<<<

Beware of low priced carpet cleaning.  If their price is truly low, you should be concerned about their quality.  How can you pay technicians a decent wage and have the best products and equipment at the lowest price? You can’t.

Some companies advertise a low price, then charge you more when they get there.  Be clear about what is included and what is not.

Even if you held them to the price they quoted you, you would get a very poor cleaning.

Here are some questions to ask every carpet cleaner about their cleaning...
What method do you use?
Do you pre-spot urine and other spots?
Do you pre-spray the carpet?
Do you pre-groom the carpet?
Do you neutralize the carpet?
Is all spot cleaning included in the price?

Questions to ask about their company...
Do you have recent references?
How long have you been in business?
Are you certified by the IICRC?
Do you have liability insurance?

QC Newsletters September 2012 - Keeping Your Carpets In Shape!

Let us help you keep those carpets in tip top shape with these 6 easy tips!

Tip #1 Entry Mats - Entry ways are often the most heavily soiled areas of carpet in the home.  The simplest yet most effective way in keeping these high traffic areas from becoming heavily soiled is to use entry mats.

Tip #2 Take Off Your Shoes - You can save wear and tear on carpet by asking everyone to take off his or her shoes before entering your home.

Tip #3 Change Your Air Filters - Changing air filters in your heating and air conditioning systems as recommended by the manufacturer’s directions.  The more dust and particles removed by the filter, the less that fall on the carpet.

Tip #4 Vacuum, Vacuum, Vacuum - Increase vacuum frequency.  Since about 75% of carpet soil is dry particulate, vacuuming more often prevents soil from embedding deep into carpets.  Vacuum heavy traffic areas slowly and repeatedly.

Tip #5 Remove Spots Immediately - Spots that are not immediately removed can turn into permanent stains very easily.  Always use a spot cleaner that is recommended by the carpet manufacturer or your trained, certified professional cleaner!  Many “over the counter” spotters leave too much soap that leaves a sticky residue behind that will make your spots return!

Tip #6 Carpet Protectant - Next time you have your carpets cleaned asked us about carpet protectants.  The soil resistor that is built into stain resistant nylon carpet is removed with regular foot traffic and harsh cleaners.  To keep your carpet cleaner longer, have protector reapplied each time you have your carpet professionally cleaned.

QC Newsletter August 2012 - How to Select a Professional Carpet Cleaning Company

How to Select a Professional Carpet Cleaning Company

“Cleaning Carpet Can Be a Dirty Business” “Not All Scum Is In the Carpet” “Don’t Let them Pull The Rug Out From Under You” “Clean Your Carpets Without Cleaning Out Your Wallet” “Don’t Get Taken To The Cleaners.”  These clever phrases have appeared recently in newspaper articles and televised news programs across the nation warning consumers about carpet cleaning scam operations. The media has related horror stories of trusting consumers who have responded to low-price carpet cleaning specials only to
become victims of unethical cleaners who refuse to honor the advertised price, intimidate the consumers and do poor quality work.

Bait-and-switch operators are prevalent in many industries, and the carpet cleaning industry is no exception. This does not mean that all carpet cleaners are rip-off artists. How do you know who is and who is not? The professional carpet cleaning industry has cited these scam activities as a major industry concern and is taking action to help eliminate unprofessional workmanship and unethical tactics. One of the leaders in this campaign is the IICRC, an international, non-profit organization that certifies cleaners who meet prescribed levels of technical proficiency and pledge to operate by a Code of Ethics.

To help educate consumers so they will not become victims of fraudulent practices within the cleaning industry, the IICRC has released a list of guidelines to consider when selecting a carpet cleaner.

Price – If an advertised price sounds too good to be true – it is! Often carpet cleaners advertise a low price just to get their foot in the door. Use common sense; a low price usually equates to low quality for any product or service.

Quality – Never should the price of cleaning services be the sole criterion for selecting a carpet cleaner. A price that sounds high may not be a signal of a rip-off. In all professions, quality work deserves a quality price.

Truth in Advertising – Read the fine print in advertised specials to find out exactly what the price includes, and request a firm price in writing before the work begins.

Training – Professional cleaning firms require management and
employees to engage in formal training in a variety of cleaning
disciplines, and these educational efforts will be ongoing.

Certification – Professional firms require technicians who have
certification from organizations like the IICRC or through
comparable franchise or independent training and testing
organizations.

Experience – The years of experience a firm has, combined with formal training programs, contribute significantly to the experience and proficiency of its employees.

Knowledgeable – Professional firms employ and train technicians who have the ability to answer basic questions regarding carpet performance and maintenance, as well as spotting and cleaning.

References – Consumers should ask for references from previous customers, and they should consult friends and business acquaintances about the reputation of the cleaning firm they are considering.

Trade Associations – Professional cleaning firms are members of regional or national trade associations or other organizations that promote high ethical standards and continuing education. Look for trade association logos in advertising.

Credibility – Community involvement through the Chamber of Commerce and/or professional business, charitable or similar organizations will be undertaken by concerned, caring professionals. Look for logos indicating involvement in these organizations.

Method – Ask the cleaner which method of cleaning will be used and the advantages and disadvantages of this method compared to other methods.

Proof – Never hesitate to ask for proof. Ask to see the cleaner’s certification card, business license and insurance certificate.

No Pressure – Technicians must be courteous and willing to take the time to thoroughly explain the cleaning and to answer all questions. The consumer should never feel pressured.

Cleaning will Preserve the Life and Beauty of Your Carpet

Cleaning will Improve Your Indoor Air Quality

You have nothing to lose except stains, spots, odors and dirt!

QC Newsletter July 2012 - Top Ten Terrible Stains

Removing the Top Ten Terrible Stains with Household Items

Blood - You should rinse quickly with cool water. Follow with an approved cleaning solution or a mix of ¼ teaspoon clear (non-bleach, non-lanolin) dishwashing liquid with one cup cool water. Blot and dry quickly.

Dye and Food Stains - Such as beverages, medicines, cosmetics, foods and other liquids containing dyes should be absorbed first. Then try the liquid dishwashing solution described in the blood remedy. Blot, repeat and rinse with clear water on a clean, white towel or white paper towel. Dry

Fingernail Polish - This can be removed using a non-acetone fingernail polish remover. Apply a small amount of the remover on a white cloth and work it in from the edges of the spill to the center. Blot the area using lukewarm tap water. Dry with a clean cloth.

Ink - (ballpoint pen) Apply 70% isopropyl rubbing alcohol to a cloth or paper towel. Don’t pour rubbing alcohol directly on the spot.

Paint - Latex responds to the detergent solution described in the blood remedy. Blot, repeat and dry.

Urine or Vomit - If left unattended it can damage carpet in several ways. Always clean these up immediately with paper towels. For pet urine, try a solution of one part white vinegar and one part water. Blot with towel, repeat.

Rust - Almost always requires professional services because of the chemical involved.

Wax - (paraffin from candles) Responds best when medium heat from an iron is applied to a clean white cloth or paper towel, which is placed over the wax spill. Repeat the heat application to the towel as the wax is absorbed. Sometimes dyes in wax won’t come out and fibers will have to be cut and the area replaced with a new carpet insert.

Wine - Comes out with the same dishwashing detergent solution found in the blood remedy. Blot, repeat and dry.

If the stain persists, call us at 503-638-4100 to schedule a free quote!

QC Newsletter April 2012 - Spring into Cleaning

Spring into Cleaning

With April showers and May flowers come dust and pollen that can leave your home in desperate need of a seasonal makeover. Spring cleaning may not be one’s idea of fun in the sun, but the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) has a few tips to make cleaning a breeze.

HVAC filters - Use quality electrostatic filters that attract particles to the filter. To keep filters in top shape, clean once per month.

Control moisture and humidity - Maintaining humidity at 50 percent or below prevents the growth of mold and the infestation of dust mites; two of the most common allergens.

Increase vacuum frequency - Since about 75% of carpet soil is dry particulate, vacuuming more often prevents soil from embedding deep into carpets. Vacuum heavy-traffic areas slowly and repeatedly.

Use high efficiency filter bags - High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) double-lined vacuum filter bags filter out 99% of particles that cause respiratory irritation.

For professional cleaning jobs, look for an IICRC-Certified Firm - Confirm their technician’s training and certification in the type of work to be performed and always obtain a written estimate.

QC Newsletter March 2012 - Three Keys to Successful Spot Cleaning

Three Keys to Successful Spot Cleaning

Here are a few things to keep in mind when spotting your own carpet:

1. All spots are not created equal. All spots should not be cleaned with the same product.

For example, urine spots that are dried should be cleaned with an “acid side” spotter due to the fact that the pH of urine changes with hours of drying. Oil or grease spots require a solvent-based spotter and do-it yourself traffic area cleaning is best approached with a dry compound material, leaving just food and general spots for the general spotter.

2. Using the wrong product can actually cause a permanent stain. Many over-the-counter products are high in alkaline content and can actually “set” the stain. In addition, some tend to leave heavy residues that cause spots to re-soil quickly.

3. Spot cleaning is not a substitute for professional traffic area cleaning. Leaving traffic areas without professional attention for long periods of time will allow abrasive soils to damage carpet beyond repair. If you don’t know how long it’s been since you have cleaned your carpets, then it’s time!

QC Newsletter March 2012 - Bait and Switch Carpet Cleaners!

Beware of Bait and Switch Carpet Cleaners!
You know the type – they “bait” you with a low price, then “switch” you to their “dual scrub” or “deep clean” system. They proceed to soak your carpet and leave a soapy residue behind.

Even if you held them to the $49, you would get a very poor cleaning.

Here are some questions to ask every carpet cleaner about their cleaning…

1. What method do you use?
2. Do you pre-spot urine and other spots?
3. Do you pre-spray the carpet?
4. Do you pre-groom the carpet?
5. Do you neutralize the carpet?
6. Do you use air movers to speed dry the carpet?
7. Is all spot cleaning included in the price?
8. Do you give a free bottle of spot remover?
9. Do you give a free pair of booties?

Questions to ask about their company…

1. Do you have recent references?
2. How long have you been in business?
3. Are you certified by the IICRC?
4. Do you use sub-contractors or employees?
5. Do you have liability insurance?

A low priced carpet cleaning company simply cannot provide the most advanced, guaranteed cleaning technology at a low, low price. Something has to be cut from their service. Our Company obviously offers all of these benefits and more.

QC Newsletter February 2012 - Deep Cleaning and Selecting A Carpet Cleaning Professional

Deep Cleaning and Selecting A Carpet Cleaning Professional

If you find that no matter how much you vacuum, your carpet still does not look like it used to, it may be time for deep cleaning. While there are do-it-yourself cleaning methods on the market, hiring a professional is the safest, fastest and easiest option. To keep your carpet at peak performance, CRI (Carpet and Rug Institute) recommends professionally deep cleaning your carpet every 12 to 18 months. (Be sure to check your carpet warranty for particular requirements.) One source for finding a professional cleaning company in your area is the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) at www.certifiedcleaners.org.

When looking for a cleaning professional, take these cautions to heart:

Be careful of any company that contacts you by phone or that advertises a cleaning price by the room. Room sizes vary and charges should be based on the total area cleaned.

The use of brand name cleaning products does not necessarily suggest an affiliation with those
companies or added credibility for the cleaning service. Make sure that you select a cleaning
professional with certification from an organization that certifies professionals.

Ask good questions. Do not be afraid to ask questions! Here are a few questions to keep in mind:

“How long have you been in business?” The answer can speak volumes about a company’s reputation and experience.

“What formal training is required for the company’s cleaning technicians? A reputable company should require employees receive training certifications.”

“Do you vacuum before deep cleaning the carpet?” All professional cleaners should vacuum before they deep clean the carpet. This critical first step makes a huge difference in the end result.

“Do you use Seal of Approval cleaning solutions and equipment?” Seal of Approval products have been independently tested and certified to effectively clean carpet without causing any damage.

Get an in-home inspection and estimate Never go strictly by television advertisements or newspaper inserts or jump at the lowest bid. DON'T accept quotes over the phone!

Have the cleaning representative come to your home for an inspection to determine the type of cleaning method that is most suitable, as well as to inspect your carpet for problem spots or
extremely soiled areas. Obtain a written agreement before any work is done. Usually they will not charge for furniture removal, routine spot removal or preconditioning. Make sure your are not charged for any extras. Get a written contract with the total price and statements of guarantees that the clean company offers.

QC Newsletter January 2012 - Happy New Year

Happy New Year from the staff of Quick and Clean Services. Here are some New Years carpet tips.

Tip #6 Carpet Protectant - Next time you have your carpets cleaned asked us about carpet protectant. The soil resistor that is built into stain resistant nylon carpet is removed with regular foot traffic and harsh cleaners. To keep your carpet cleaner longer, have protector reapplied each time you have your carpet professionally cleaned.

QC Newsletter January 2012 - Carpet Fun Facts

Carpet Fun Facts

It takes 36 two liter bottles to produce one square yard of carpet.

45,000 yards of carpet would cover 7.5 NFL football fields!

Vacuum cleaners in the early 20th century were large, powered by coal, and required three people to operate them. Other early vacuums cleaners had to be parked outside a building and had long hoses that went through the windows. Yet another early version of the vacuum was installed in the house cellar and connected to a network of pipes that led to each room in the house.
