QC Newsletters December 2015 - Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays from Quick & Clean Services LLC

Here’s some helpful tips for spills during your holiday season

Dye and Food Stains - Beverages, medicines, cosmetics, foods and other liquids containing dyes should be absorbed first. Then try the liquid dishwashing solution described in the wine remedy. Blot, repeat and rinse with clear water on a clean, white towel or white paper towel. Dry.

Blood - Rinse blood quickly with cool water. Follow with an approved cleaning solution or a mix of ¼ teaspoon clear (non bleach non lanolin) dishwashing liquid with one cup cool water. Blot and dry quickly.

Wine - Blot with white towel. Mix ¼ teaspoon clear (non bleach non lanolin) dishwashing liquid with one cup cool water.  Blot and dry quickly.  Alternatively, you can pour salt on wine, let it absorb then vacuum.

Urine or Vomit - If left unattended it can damage carpet in several ways. Always clean these up immediately with paper towels. For pet urine/vomit, try a solution of one part white vinegar and
one part water. Blot with towel, repeat.

QC Newsletter November 2015 - Study Shows Carpet Helps Indoor Air Quality

Study Shows Carpet Helps Indoor Air Quality
Dalton, GA, Jan. 8, 2014 --

A series of studies funded by Shaw Industries indicates that effectively cleaned carpets can trap allergens and other particles, resulting in fewer particles escaping into the air and thus contributing to the maintenance of indoor air quality.

“These studies challenge the long held belief that carpet must adversely impact indoor air quality as it pertains to allergy and asthma sufferers,” said Dr. Bruce Mitchell, CEO of  Airmid Healthgroup limited, the independent biomedical research organization that conducted the study.

“Effectively cleaned carpets have the capacity to trap allergen and microbial particles, making these particles less available to become airborne and thus maintaining indoor air quality. This makes   regularly cleaned carpet a choice for families impacted by asthma and allergies.” The studies, which were presented at the annual meetings of both the American Academy of    Asthma, Allergy, and Immunology (AAAAI) and the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI), evaluated several residential hardwood and carpet products. The studies aimed to determine the depth of allergen penetration in carpet, the levels of   allergens found in the air and the impact of carpet cleaning on allergen removal.  Prior to cleaning, the levels of airborne allergens, such as cat and dust mite allergens, were less for all of the carpets than the hardwood flooring, even after the carpet was repeatedly disturbed. After cleaning the carpets, a meaningful reduction in allergens occurred in the carpet and the surrounding air, Shaw said. The carpets were cleaned using the industry recommended method, which included vacuuming, cleaning with a cleaning agent, agitation, and hot water extraction.“These findings add to the existing body of research that indicates that well-maintained and effectively cleaned carpets can be a viable choice for asthma and allergy sufferers,” said Paul     Murray, vice president of sustainability and environmental affairs at Shaw.

QC Newsletter October 2015 - Area Rug Cleaning

Area Rug Cleaning

Sixty-four percent of U.S. homeowners have rugs in their homes (survey conducted by the IICRC) but only 40 percent clean them on a regular basis. Like carpets, rugs require proper maintenance to
retain their appearance and durability.

Area rugs tend to be made of more delicate fibers, questionable dyes and woven constructions that can easily be damaged by do-it-yourself procedures or even professionals without adequate training and experience.

Certified technicians are trained to recognize different fibers, constructions and types of carpet and rugs, along with their potential problems. They have the equipment, training and experience to restore the beauty of carpet and rugs — improving the look of your home or business and protecting the indoor environment, as well as your investment.

For more information go to:

QC Newsletter September 2015 - Three Reasons to Get Your Carpets Cleaned

Three Reasons to Get Your Carpets Cleaned

1.  Your home will look beautiful!  You can keep an environment your family and friends will enjoy being in.  Your carpet strongly reflects your entire home.  Half of the first impression is based on the appearance of your carpet and floors.  Stain-free carpet leaves a great first impression.

2.  You’ll save money by your carpet lasting longer!  Maintenance is always cheaper that replacement.  Carpet and rug manufacturers recommend professional cleaning at least every 12 months.  In fact, many carpet warranties require IICRC certified   professional cleaning at least every 12 -18 months or your warranty is void.  Proper cleaning helps carpet last much longer.

3.  You’ll have a healthier home!  The EPA (Environment Protection Agency) recommends homes with children or pets have carpet cleaned every 6-12 months.  Proper cleaning actually improves the health of your home by removing pollens, mold spores, dander, pollutants and soils.

QC Newsletter September 2015 - The Real Reason Why Your Tile, Grout and Floors Get So Dirty!

The Real Reason Why Your Tile, Grout and Floors Get So Dirty!

Mopping is the primary problem.  Yes, mopping and cleaning should be done regularly but the cleaning has to be done properly.  The biggest mistake is using too much floor cleaner with no rinse.  Believe it or not, too much floor detergent causes a build up that actually makes your floors look dirtier.

Rinse your floor!  Every second or third cleaning, you  should clean your floors with pure water.  Avoid vinegar because vinegar can break down any sealants that may be applied grout or floor.

What about your dirty grout?

Those little liens between your tile can be difficult, if not near impossible to mop thoroughly.  The grout lines dip down below the tile, which causes your mop to never come in contact with the grout.

Using a brush to clean in the grout lines may be required for severe soil build up.  However, brushing each grout line can be VERY time consuming.  One alternative is   using a floor machine that’s designed to brush the tile and extract the dirty water.  This can be more beneficial then mopping.

How to Keep Your Tile and Grout Sparkling Clean

The best preventative measure to help your grout clean up easily is to have a professional grout sealer applied.  This is something that “should” be done immediately after installation, however most tile installers don’t do it for you.  The lack of grout sealer and improper grout sealer is a big reason why grout gets so dirty.

You’ll get sparkling clean tile and grout when we deep clean with our high pressured  extraction system.  Call today for a FREE estimate!

QC Newsletter July 2015 - Tips for Your Carpet

Let us help you keep those carpets in tip top shape with these 6 easy tips!

Tip #1 Entry Mats - Entry ways are often the most heavily soiled areas of carpet in the home. The simplest yet most effective way in keeping these high traffic areas from becoming heavily soiled is to use entry mats.

Tip #2 Take Off Your Shoes - You can save wear and tear on carpet by asking everyone to take off his or her shoes before entering your home.

Tip #3 Change Your Air Filters - Changing air filters in your heating and air conditioning systems as recommended by the manufacturer’s directions.  The more dust and particles removed by the filter, the less that fall on the carpet.

Tip #4 Vacuum, Vacuum, Vacuum - Increase the vacuum frequency.  Since about 75% of carpet soil is dry particulate, vacuuming more often prevents soil from embedding deep into carpets.  Vacuum heavy traffic areas slowly and repeatedly.

Tip #5 Remove Spots Immediately - Spots that are not immediately removed can turn into permanent stains very easily.  Always use a spot cleaner that is recommended by the carpet manufacturer or your trained, certified professional cleaner!  Many “over the counter” spotters leave too much soap that leaves a sticky residue behind that will make your spots return!

Tip #6 Carpet Protectant - Next time you have your carpets cleaned asked us about carpet protectant.  The soil resistant that is built into the nylon carpet is removed with regular foot traffic and harsh cleaners.  To keep your carpet cleaner longer, have protector reapplied each time you have your
carpet professionally cleaned.

QC Newsletter June 2015 - Carpet Cleaning Secrets

Carpet Cleaning Secrets

Despite your best efforts at cleanliness, your carpet will eventually become the victim of drops, spills, accidents, and whatever's on the bottom of your shoes.

Blot Stains, Don’t Rub Them.   Dab stains with a cleaning solution and a clean cloth, paper
towels or a sponge.  The key is blotting.  Blotting puts a small amount of pressure on the stairs to soak it up.  Rubbing cause the particles to get around into the carpet fibers and this can lead to the premature breakdown of those fibers.  Always blot from the outside of the stain inward, as blotting outward can spread the stain.

Candy Crush (A fun game but NOT fun in your carpet!)
If you have kids in the house, it’s only a matter of time before candy ends up in the carpet.  Try to scrape it with a spotter brush or butter knife.  Then use a sponge, apply water mixed with a mild soap.  It’s very important to get all the sugar out of the area or it will attract dirt and debris.  Once the candy is removed, dry the spot by blotting it with a damp cloth or towel.

Freeze Dry Gum
You step in chewing gum out on the street but don’t realize it until you tracked that sticky mess onto your carpet.  To get it out, head to the freezer and grab a couple of ice cubes.  Freeze the gum with ice cubs for about 30 seconds.  Once the gum is frozen solid, use a spoon to life up the bulk and cut the strands of carpet as close to the gum as possible.  Be careful not to cut too much!

Deep Clean Regularly
Cleaning the carpet is essential to keeping it looking fresh and new.  Steam cleaning involves
using a cleaning solution under pressure injected into the carpet via water jet nozzles.  Then
the machine extracts the solution along with the dirt and debris in the carpet.  Deep cleaning
is recommended anytime between 6 months to 18 months.

Random Facts About Carpet

1. Each year, several pounds of soil can accumulate in and under a carpet.

2. The Norwalk virus or Norovirus (the virus that causes the stomach flu) can survive on an uncleaned carpet for a month or more.

3. New carpets can be a source of chemical emissions. Customers should ask retailers about selecting lower-emitting carpet adhesive or about airing out the carpet before it is installed.

4. Club soda is effective in getting up fresh stains in carpet. Just pour some on the spot, let it set for a few seconds, and then sponge it up.

5. To remove gum from carpet, try pressing ice cubes against the gum until it becomes brittle and breaks off. Then use a spot remover to get rid of the remnants.

QC Newsletter May 2015 - How To Select A Professional

How To Select A Professional

“Cleaning Carpet Can Be a Dirty Business” “Not All Scum Is In the Carpet” “Don’t Let them Pull The Rug Out From Under You” “Clean Your Carpets Without Cleaning Out Your Wallet” “Don’t Get Taken To The Cleaners.”  These clever phrases have appeared recently in newspaper articles and televised news programs across the nation warning consumers about carpet cleaning scam operations. The media has related horror stories of trusting consumers who have responded to low-price carpet cleaning specials only to become victims of unethical cleaners who refuse to honor the advertised price, intimidate the consumers and do poor quality work.

Bait-and-switch operators are prevalent in many industries, and the carpet cleaning industry is no exception. This does not mean that all carpet cleaners are rip-off artists. How do you know who is and who is not? The professional carpet cleaning industry has cited these scam activities as a major industry concern and is taking action to help eliminate unprofessional workmanship and unethical tactics. One of the leaders in this campaign is the IICRC, an international, non-profit organization that certifies cleaners who meet prescribed levels of technical proficiency and pledge to operate by a Code of Ethics.

To help educate consumers so they will not become victims of fraudulent practices within the cleaning industry, the IICRC has released a list of guidelines to consider when selecting a carpet cleaner.

Price – If an advertised price sounds too good to be true – it is! Often carpet cleaners advertise a low price just to get their foot in the door. Use common sense; a low price usually equates to low quality for any product or service. Legitimate business people have expenses they must cover, including license, taxes, insurance, employee wages, and benefits, and quality tools of the trade. A professional carpet cleaner who must cover all of these business expenses and make a profit to stay in the business cannot afford to drive to your house for $9.95, much less clean a room of carpet when there.

Quality – Never should the price of cleaning services be the sole criterion for selecting a carpet cleaner.  A price that sounds high may not be a signal of a rip-off. In all professions, quality work deserves a quality price.

Truth in Advertising – Read the fine print in advertised specials to find out exactly what the price includes, and request a firm price in writing before the work begins.

Training – Professional cleaning firms require management and employees to engage in formal training in a variety of cleaning disciplines, and these educational efforts will be ongoing. Consumers should ask about the formal training background of technicians who will be cleaning their carpet.

Certification – Professional firms require technicians who have certification from organizations like the IICRC or through comparable franchise or independent training and testing organizations.

Experience – The years of experience a firm has, combined with formal training programs, contribute significantly to the experience and proficiency of its employees.

Knowledgeable – Professional firms employ and train technicians who have the ability to answer basic questions regarding carpet performance and maintenance, as well as spotting and cleaning.

References – Consumers should ask for references from previous customers, and they should consult friends and business acquaintances about the reputation of the cleaning firm they are considering. Do not hesitate to call the Chamber of Commerce and the Better Business Bureau.

Trade Associations – Professional cleaning firms are members of regional or national trade associations or other organizations that promote high ethical standards and continuing education. Look for trade association logos in advertising.

Credibility – Community involvement through the Chamber of Commerce and/or professional business, charitable or similar organizations will be undertaken by concerned, caring professionals. Look for logos indicating involvement in these organizations.

Method – Ask the cleaner which method of cleaning will be used and the advantages and disadvantages of this method compared to other methods.

Proof – Never hesitate to ask for proof. Ask to see the cleaner’s certification card, business license and insurance certificate.

No Pressure – Technicians must be courteous and willing to take the time to thoroughly explain the cleaning and to answer all questions. The consumer should never feel pressured.  There is no single criterion for selecting a carpet cleaning service. Several combined factors must be considered in the selection decision.

QC Newsletter April 2015 - Three Keys to Successful Spot Cleaning

Three Keys to Successful Spot Cleaning
Here are a few things to keep in mind when spotting your carpet:

1. All spots are not created equal.  All spots should not be cleaned with the same product.  For example, urine spots that are dried should be cleaned with an “acid side” spotter due to the fact that the pH of urine changes within hours of drying. There are specific cleaners for different spots.  All cleaners are not created equal either!

2.  Using the wrong product can actually cause a permanent stain.  Many over the counter products are high in alkaline content and can actually “set” the stain.  In addition, some leave heavy residues that cause spots to re-soil quickly.

3.  Spot cleaning is not a substitute for professional traffic area cleaning.  Leaving traffic areas without professional attention for long periods of time will allow abrasive soils to damage carpet beyond repair.  If you don’t know how long it’s been since you have cleaned your carpets, then it’s time!

QC Newsletter March 2015 - Random Carpet Facts

Random Carpet Facts

The Norwalk virus or Norovirus (the virus that causes the stomach flu) can survive on an un cleaned carpet for a month or more.

The oldest surviving carpet is the celebrated Pazyryk carpet, which is over 2,000 years old. It was found in the 1940s in a Scythian tomb in southern Siberia

Microbiologists have identified air blown from a running vacuum cleaner as one of the five places     in the home that has the highest numbers of germs. Other places include dish sponges, washing         machines, bathroom toilets during a flush, and kitchen trash cans.

Each year, several pounds of soil can accumulate in and under a carpet.

A person sheds about 1.5 million skin flakes an hour, most of which becomes embedded in our carpets

To raise depressions in the carpet left by heavy    furniture, hold a steam iron close enough for steam to reach the carpet, but don’t let the iron touch the carpet. Lift fibers by scraping them with edge of a coin or spoon.

QC Newsletter March 2015 - Area Rugs

Area Rugs

Area rugs are more popular than ever with consumers today, thanks to the increase in hard  surface flooring.  If you've purchased a high-quality area rug for your home, you may wonder how to protect your investment and maintain its beauty.

Fiber content and construction are the major factors that determine the appropriate rug cleaning method. The IICRC offers several tips for keeping your rugs looking like new:

Vacuum rugs on a regular basis. Fringe should be hand-vacuumed only.

When spills occur, scoop or blot-up the excess.  Then dilute the area with water and blot - don't rub - until no more color is visible on your clean, white towel.  Ideally, rugs should be removed from the home or office to be professionally cleaned. Rotate your rugs once a year to ensure even wear.
How often should your rug be professionally cleaned? The answer depends on its location in your home. Does it get heavy foot traffic? Are there any pets? Often, animals are drawn to rugs and can leave behind unpleasant surprises that require specialized treatment.

QC Newsletter February 2014 - Conquering Kid and Pet Stains

How “kid stains”are conquered

First, your carpet is pre-treated with a safe and powerful cleaning agent to break down stuck in grease and dirt. The   cleaning agent is groomed into the carpet and rinsed with our truck mounted system.  Any remaining spots like gum, wax, nail polish, drink spills, crayons, marker, silly putty and food are treated with one of our spotting agents.  Our technicians are experienced in every type of “kid stain” imaginable.

How “pet stains” are conquered

First, we’ll pinpoint your problem areas with our urine detector to show us exactly where the urine is located.  Next, we’ll pour enzyme directly on the areas and use a special tool designed to pull urine from the carpet padding.  We guarantee this is the most effective process for urine removal.

QC Newsletter February 2015 - A Common Story

A Common Story.....

As you sit on the sofa watching television, you hear giggling coming from your daughter’s bedroom.  You smile and think how nice it is that she has a playmate to keep her amused.  Soon, the giggling stops.  Everything is quiet.  That’s when you get worried.  You yell down the hall, “What’s going on in there?”

“Nothing, “ she says, followed by more  giggling.  At this point, you realize you should get up from the sofa and check out the cause of the mysterious giggling.

You peek into your daughter’s room and find her painting her fingernails.  That’s not so bad.  Then, you go further in the room and discover fingernail polish all over the carpet  Not again! Last time you tried eight different spot removers and still couldn’t remove the stains.

This time, call Quick and Clean Services.  Their technicians are trained for issues just like this, but hurry!  Stains like this need to be removed quickly!
