QC Newsletter November 2016 - Thanksgiving Tips and Tricks!

Thanksgiving Tips and Tricks!

1. Plan your menu, print recipes, cut out magazine recipes, grab cookbooks.

2.  Make your grocery list. Try to get your shopping done in one day.

3.  Clean your refrigerator to make roam for groceries.

4.  About 4 days before Turkey day, check your turkey to see how long it needs to be thawed.  A thawed turkey can last up to 4 days in the frig.

5.  About a day or two prior, prep ingredients like cutting onions, celery and carrots.

6.  The day before T-day or even two days before make your dips, spreads and butters.

7.  Set your table the night before.

8.  Use your Crockpot to make simple recipes like caramelized apples, soups and potatoes.  This will be a time saver when dinner time comes.

9.  On Thanksgiving morning, just plan accordingly to cooking times of your food.  Remember the longer the cooked turkey sits, the juicer it gets.

10.  Relax, it’s about family, friends and being together!

QC Newsletter November 2016 - Three Keys to Successful Spot Cleaning

Three Keys to Successful Spot Cleaning

Here are a few things to keep in mind when spotting your carpet:

1. All spots are not created equal.  All spots should not be cleaned with the same product.
For example, urine spots that are dried should be cleaned with an “acid side” spotter due to the fact that the pH of urine changes within hours of drying. There are specific cleaners for different spots.  All cleaners are not created equal either!

2.  Using the wrong product can actually cause a permanent stain.  Many over the counter products are high in alkaline content and can actually “set” the stain.  In addition, some leave heavy residues that cause spots to re-soil quickly.

3.  Spot cleaning is not a substitute for professional traffic area cleaning.  Leaving traffic areas without professional attention for long periods of time will allow abrasive soils to damage carpet beyond repair.  If you don’t know how long it’s been since you have cleaned your carpets, then it’s time!

Hard Surface Cleaning

In today’s home decor, hard surface flooring is playing an increasingly important role. Examples of popular flooring materials include stone, concrete, ceramic/clay, wood, resilient and specialty flooring. These materials appear to be easy to clean, maintain and restore, however, soils on hard surface flooring have a tendency to build up progressively, resulting in erosion. Sooner or later, it’s necessary to clean beyond routine dusting and damp mopping; that’s the time to call in a certified professional for help.

QC Newsletter October 2016 - Cat Scratching Got You Down?

Cat Scratching Got You Down?

This isn't exactly a revelation, since you probably have the  evidence   everywhere, in the tattered corners of your sofa, shredded drapes and your frayed nerves. Though your kitty's natural propensity for scratching may not be big news, it is a fact that you'll need to take into account if you're going to make any headway in winning the battle to keep his/her from scratching in places you consider undesirable.

Of course, cats need an outlet to claw their nails but we all prefer it’s not our upholstery.  You can't make a cat do anything he or she doesn't want to do. Get clear on that and getting them to stop doing something they enjoy is just about as difficult. Therefore, you have to think smart and re-channel his/her desires.

So what to do !?!?  First of all, have an appropriate cat scratching post for your cat, I know...... You’re thinking....duh!  Sisal scratching posts are ideal for releasing your kitty’s primal urges. This is a material he/she can shred to pieces with great satisfaction but are you thinking what do I do to protect my furniture???  There is a product that you can apply to your upholstery, curtains, mattress, etc.  It’s a tape that that deters cats from scratching!  It’s called Sticky Paws!  Widely available for purchase at pet stores and Amazon,  also reasonably priced!

QC Newsletter September 2016 - How to Choose a Professional Carpet Cleaner

How to Choose a Professional Carpet Cleaner

“Cleaning Carpet Can Be a Dirty Business” “Not All Scum Is In the Carpet” “Don’t Let them Pull The Rug Out From Under You” “Clean Your Carpets Without Cleaning Out Your Wallet” “Don’t Get Taken To The Cleaners.”  These clever phrases have appeared recently in newspaper articles and televised news programs across the nation warning consumers about carpet cleaning scam operations. The media has related horror stories of trusting consumers who have responded to low-price carpet cleaning specials only to become victims of unethical cleaners who refuse to honor the advertised price, intimidate the consumers and do poor quality work.

Bait-and-switch operators are prevalent in many industries, and the carpet cleaning industry is no exception. This does not mean that all carpet cleaners are rip-off artists. How do you know who is and who is not? The professional carpet cleaning industry has cited these scam activities as a major industry concern and is taking action to help eliminate unprofessional workmanship and unethical tactics. One of the leaders in this campaign is the IICRC, an international, non-profit organization that certifies cleaners who meet prescribed levels of technical proficiency and pledge to operate by a Code of Ethics.

To help educate consumers so they will not become victims of fraudulent practices within the cleaning industry, the IICRC has released a list of guidelines to consider when selecting a carpet cleaner.

Price – If an advertised price sounds too good to be true – it is! Often carpet cleaners advertise a low price just to get their foot in the door. Use common sense; a low price usually equates to low quality for any product or service. Legitimate business people have expenses they must cover, including license, taxes, insurance, employee wages, and benefits, and quality tools of the trade.  A professional carpet cleaner who must cover all of these business expenses and make a profit to stay in the business cannot afford to drive to your house for $5.95, much less clean a room of carpet when there.

Quality – Never should the price of cleaning services be the sole criterion for selecting a carpet cleaner. A price that sounds high may not be a signal of a rip-off. In all professions, quality work deserves a quality price.

Truth in Advertising – Read the fine print in advertised specials to find out exactly what the price includes, and request a firm price in writing before the work begins.

Training – Professional cleaning firms require management and employees to engage in formal training in a variety of cleaning    disciplines, and these educational efforts will be ongoing. Consumers should ask about the formal training background of technicians who will be cleaning their carpet.

Certification – Professional firms require technicians who have certification from organizations like the IICRC or through comparable franchise or independent training and testing organizations.

Experience – The years of experience a firm has, combined with formal training programs, contribute significantly to the experience and proficiency of its employees.

Knowledgeable – Professional firms employ and train technicians who have the ability to answer basic questions regarding carpet performance and maintenance, as well as spotting and cleaning.

References – Consumers should ask for references from previous customers, and they should consult friends and business acquaintances about the reputation of the cleaning firm they are considering. Do not hesitate to call the Chamber of Commerce and the Better Business Bureau.

Trade Associations – Professional cleaning firms are members of regional or national trade associations or other organizations that   promote high ethical standards and continuing education. Look for trade association logos in advertising.

Credibility – Community involvement through the Chamber of Commerce and/or professional business, charitable or similar organizations will be undertaken by concerned, caring professionals. Look for logos indicating involvement in these organizations.

Method – Ask the cleaner which method of cleaning will be used and the advantages and disadvantages of this method compared to other methods.

Proof – Never hesitate to ask for proof. Ask to see the cleaner’s certification card, business license and insurance certificate.

No Pressure – Technicians must be courteous and willing to take the time to thoroughly explain the cleaning and to answer all questions. The consumer should never feel pressured. There is no single criterion for selecting a carpet cleaning service. Several combined factors must be considered in the selection decision.

QC Newsletter August 2016 - Tips for Hardwood Floor Care and Maintenance

Tips for Hardwood Floor Care and Maintenance

Like any floor covering, factory finished wood floors will show signs of wear over time, depending on the size and lifestyle of your family. By observing a few precautions and setting up a regular cleaning routine and maintenance program, you can expect years of beauty from your hardwood floor.

Sweep or vacuum regularly since built-up grit can damage the surface of the wood. The vacuum head must be a brush or felt type. Be certain the wheels of the vacuum are clean and do not damage the finish. Do not use a vacuum with a beater bar head. Do not use oil soaps, liquid or paste wax products, or other household cleaners that contain citrus oils, lemon oil, tung oil, silicon, or ammonia.

Keep pets’ nails trimmed and paws clean and free of dirt, gravel, grease, oil, and stains.

Place protective felt pads beneath furniture legs and feet to reduce scratches and dents. Replace pads as needed.  Also, use a dolly and protective sheet of plywood when moving heavy objects, furniture or appliances.

Remove shoes with spiked or damaged heels before walking on floor.

Exposure to the sun and its UV rays accelerates the oxidation and aging of wood. This can cause the wood stain and/or wood to fade and/or to change color. We recommend that you rearrange rugs and furniture periodically so the floor ages evenly.

Use area rugs in high-traffic areas and pivot points, for example, stair landings, room entries, etc, especially if you have a large family or indoor pets.

Lastly, every 18-24 months your hardwood floors should be professionally cleaned to restore it’s original beautiful finish.  This is done by our thorough process that involves a deep cleaning and optional top coat finish.  This process protects the original stain and if done periodically will keep you from refinishing or replacing your floors in the future.

QC Newsletter July 2016 - Pet Treatment

Pet Accidents Happen, Stop Them From Getting Worse

You know how it goes: The minute you turn your back, your pet decides that your clean carpet is  the perfect place to relieve himself.
You clean and clean, but you can’t get rid of that smell. What can you do?

Take Care of It Quickly

Pet urine can cause permanent damage to your floors and fabrics. It can also create an unhealthy indoor environment. When urine is first deposited onto a floor or fabric, it is in an almost “neutral” state, which means it is easier to remove when it is fresh.
Once it dries, it turns “alkaline” and becomes more difficult to remove. If left for days or weeks, depending on the fabric or floor type, it will permanently change the dye structure, therefore causing permanent staining. Even if the soluble deposits are removed, the damage to the dye structure may already be done.

Our Expert Approach

We will inspect your carpeted areas with ultraviolet lights and moisture probes. Upon detection, enzyme treatment is applied directly to the infected area. The enzyme breaks down and digests the proteins, then is extracted and the carpet is cleaned with our 10-step process.

QC Newsletter June 2016 - Carpet and Furniture Lasts Longer with Fabric & Fiber Protection!

Carpet and Furniture Lasts Longer with Fabric & Fiber Protection!

This application assures you of the best protection possible against resoiling and stains. Maxim Fiber Protection has two protective properties. The first is an acid dye blocker that is basically a clear dye that fills the extra dye sites in a fiber. This helps to keep “foreign” dyes (such as red dye in a beverage) from penetrating the carpet fiber. The second property is called a “fluorochemical”. It is commonly known as 3M Scotchgard® or DuPont Teflon®. This treatment helps keep spillage from actually getting to the acid dye blocker, but its biggest job is to resist dry soil.

By resisting dry soil, less soil bonds to the carpet; therefore, more soil is being picked up by your vacuum. Making sure that you have a sufficient amount of protector on your carpet will help keep the soil from bonding to the carpet. Once it bonds to the carpet, it acts like sandpaper on your traffic area. Once the traffic area yarns are broken down, there is no way to bring them back to their original state.

Bridgepoint’s Maxim Fine Fabric Protector can be applied to just about any type of furniture fabric including delicate fabrics such as silk. We can protect new or just cleaned furniture. Bridgepoint’s Maxim Fine Fabric Protector has a special carrying agent that will not water mark delicate fabrics. Once the product dries, it will leave a layer of protection that will help the homeowner maintain furniture with ease.

Six Reasons You Should Always Get Carpet Protector:
Reduces permanent stains. A great looking carpet can be ruined by an ugly spot. Unprotected carpet doesn’t repel spillage as well as protected carpet. Protector will allow you to remove spots and spills more effectively, therefore helping you to avoid permanent staining.

Helps save your traffic areas from becoming destroyed. Traffic area soil is very abrasive and cuts carpet yarns like a knife. This damaging soil can easily bond to an unprotected carpet. By applying protector, you will increase the life of your carpet dramatically. When you vacuum your protected carpet the soils will release from the carpet pile much more effectively.

Make spots easier to remove. The easier a spot is to remove, the less cleaner you will have to use. The less agitation you will have to use, and the less time it will take. Many spots can be removed easily with just water.

Makes your next professional cleaning more effective. Having protector applied to your carpet will enhance your next cleaning. More soil will be removed the next time your carpeting is professionally cleaned.

Helps avoid costly service calls. Although you want to call us to handle any spot you cannot remove immediately, carpet protector helps you remove more spots than you could without protector. You may be able to save a minimum charge by removing the spot yourself.

Your carpet will look better and last longer when it is protected

QC Newsletter June 2016 - How Carpet Cleaning Reduces Asthma and Allergies

How Carpet Cleaning Reduces Asthma and Allergies

The U.S. EPA reports that Americans spend nearly 90 percent of their time indoors which means that indoor air quality is of the utmost importance.

Many urban legends state that carpet reduces indoor air quality, but the facts support quite the opposite in that carpet is better for indoor air quality because it acts as a filter by trapping allergens and keeping them out of the breathing zone. In fact, there is no scientific study linking the rise of allergies and asthma to the use of carpet.

If you have carpet in your home, keeping it clean is the best way to eliminate the negative effects of allergens.

Vacuuming is the simplest and most effective way to remove dirt and allergens from carpet. In fact, 90 to 95% of all dry soil by weight can be removed from carpet by following a routine vacuuming schedule. CRI Seal of Approval tests vacuums for effective soil removal and dust containment, which means SOA-approved vacuums are among the best at raising indoor air quality.

Another imperative in improving indoor air quality is a regular deep cleaning.

A deep cleaning every 12-18 months by a Seal of Approval service provider will renew the look of carpet by removing the deepest dirt. SOA Service Providers utilize certified equipment that effectively removes soil to get carpet looking like new.

If you’re committed to improving indoor air quality in your home, choosing carpet and choosing to clean it is the best way to accomplish this.

QC Newsletter May 2016 - Upholstery Cleaning

Upholstery Cleaning

To keep your furniture clean, it's necessary to conduct routine maintenance including vacuuming and immediate attention to spills, coupled with periodic cleaning by a certified technician every one to two years. Furniture and fabric manufacturers   recommend that consumers not wait until severe soiling occurs  before cleaning because the greater the soiling, the less the likelihood of restoring the fabric's original color, appearance and texture.

Regular cleaning of fabric and leather furnishings by a trained, certified technician can help restore your furniture's appearance, extend its life and keep it looking like new. Moreover, certified technicians can offer simple suggestions to maintain a clean and healthful home or business environment overall.

QC Newsletter May 2016 - The Difference Between Real and Apparent Soiling

The Difference Between Real and Apparent Soiling

Often times, custodial personnel confuse apparent carpet soiling with real    soiling. In fact, real soiling is often defined as "any matter that is foreign to the construction of the carpet and that can actually be removed from the carpet."  On the other hand, apparent soiling is when a carpet only appears soiled; in these cases, the carpet's appearance often cannot be corrected because it is not really soiled. A good example of a situation in which a carpet looks soiled but is really not   is caused by carpet abrasion. Similar to scratches on glass, carpet abrasion    occurs when soil scratches or scrapes the surface of carpet fibers. This can    interfere with light reflection on the carpet, causing these areas to look grey, dull and dirty. "Since carpet abrasion is typically caused by dry soiling, frequent vacuuming is an effective way to stop or slow down carpet abrasion," says Mark Cuddy,    National Sales Director for U.S. Products, manufacturer of portable hot-water carpet extractors. "This should be supplemented with frequent hot-water carpet extraction." According to Cuddy, other types of soiling that are apparent rather than real  include: • Fading: The gradual loss of color due to prolonged exposure to light sources. These sources can be either fluorescent or natural; either way,  customers often believe a faded carpet is actually a soiled carpet.• Wear: A reduction in pile density caused by foot traffic over time. Eventually, this results in minor fiber loss, which can noticeably change the   carpet's appearance, making it look soiled."These situations give cleaning professionals and technicians an opportunity to educate their customers on carpet and carpet care," says Cuddy. "While  abrasion, fading, and wear typically cannot be corrected once they have occurred, vacuuming frequently and hot-water extraction regularly can help prevent or slow down apparent soiling from re-occurring-something customers will really appreciate learning about."

QC Newsletters April 2016 - Reducing Vaccum Hurts a Carpets Life

Reducing Vacuuming Hurts a Carpets Life

Reducing vacuum frequencies hurts a carpet’s life and appearance, but these cuts can also adversely impact a facility’s indoor air quality.

Most people are aware that outdoor air pollution can damage their health, but they may not know that indoor air quality can have a similar effect. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) studies of human exposure to air pollutants indicate that indoor air levels of many pollutants may be five times higher than outdoor levels. People spend as much as 80 percent of their time inside; indoor air quality may be a public health risk.

During the past several decades, construction of more tightly sealed buildings, reduced ventilation rates to save energy, the use of synthetic building materials and furnishings, and the use of chemically formulated products have increased the potential for indoor air pollution.

According to the American Lung Association, indoor air quality can cause or contribute to the development of chronic lung diseases such as asthma. It is estimated 40 million individuals in the United States are affected by allergies. Allergies are an overreaction of the immune system to foreign substances. This over reaction weakens the immune system, draining a person’s energy and leaving him/her more susceptible to infectious diseases caused by viruses and bacteria.

Allergic reactions can range from mildly uncomfortable to life threatening, as in a severe asthma attack. Health experts are especially concerned about people with asthma. These individuals have very sensitive airways that can react to various irritants, making breathing difficult. The estimated number of people with asthma has risen more than 59 percent since 1970. The number of asthma-related deaths has also increased.

The largest source of indoor air pollution is from the common dust mite. In 1993, John W. Maunder, Ph.D., director of the Medical Entomology Center at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, published a paper entitled “Carpets, House Dust Mites and Asthma” in which he states, “There is no longer room for serious doubt about the dominant role of the house dust mite in both the initial induction of asthma and in the subsequent triggering of wheezy attacks.”

Asthmatics are not allergic to living mites but to the airborne feces of mites and, to a much lesser extent, to dead mites. Dr. Maunder states that although living mites are difficult to remove from carpet, their feces are readily removed from carpets by proper cleaning.

“A carpet regularly cleaned will not and cannot contain enough allergen to affect people. The proper maintenance of carpet completely prevents trouble from that source,” he writes.

A recent study concludes that carpets may benefit indoor air quality by acting as a filter for indoor air, trapping and      holding dust mites, pollutants, and allergens such as pollen, pet dander and molds, which play an important role in allergic diseases. The key to maintaining good indoor air quality in a school or office building is to clean this filter regularly, i.e., remove these pollutants through vacuuming.

QC Newsletter March 2016 - Keep your house cleaner by parking shoes at the door!

Keep your house cleaner by parking shoes at the door

If you could do one simple thing to have a cleaner house, carpets that look like new, and less bacteria in your home, would you do it? All you have to do it remove your shoes before coming into the house.Growing custom.  More and more Americans are making a habit of kicking off their shoes at the door. The is common practice in Hawaii as a way to keep sand out of the house, and widely popular in Asia. As Asian decorating and customs grab hold here, more and more homeowners now ban wearing shoes in the house.

More than just a nicety or custom, removing your shoes before entering a home makes good sense. After you tromp around city streets, buses and trains, public restrooms, stores, stairwells and countless corridors each day, your shoes collect bacteria and debris, which you then track inside. The dirt and germs get trapped in carpets.

EPA findings.  If you're still not convinced that wearing shoes in the house carries hazards, consider these findings from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In 1991, the EPA conducted a "Doormat Study" to measure the amount of lead dust in homes. The results showed that in homes where a doormat was added at the entrance and shoes were banned indoors, the incidence of lead dust and other chemicals in the home fell about 60 percent. Not only that, but in homes where shoes are removed, there was also a reduction in allergens and bacteria being tracked into the house.
What's more, dirty shoes soil carpets. Over time, heavily trafficked areas can become so saturated with dirt that they develop dark "lanes." Small stains can also spread over time.

Floor cleaning.  In addition to banning shoes in the house, have your carpets steam cleaned once or twice a year, and avoid carpet cleaners that use surfactants (soap). Even some professional carpet services use soap-based cleaners. These products attract more dirt and actually make carpets dirtier faster. Choose carpet cleaning products recommended by the Carpet and Rug Institute (http://www.carpet-rug.org).

Be sure to vacuum once or twice a week, and use a vacuum with a HEPA filter or vacuum bag to trap lead dust and other chemicals or allergens. Place good quality doormats by every entrance to help trap dirt and debris.

By making some simple changes you can have a cleaner home - and even cleaner socks!

QC Newsletter February 2015 - Random Facts About Carpet

Random Facts About Carpet

1.  The Norwalk virus or Norovirus (the virus that causes the stomach flu) can survive on an uncleaned carpet for a month or more.

2. Microbiologists have identified air blown from a running vacuum cleaner as one of the five places in the home that has the highest numbers of germs. Other places include dish sponges, washing machines, bathroom toilets during a flush, and kitchen trash cans.

3. The five-second rule is a myth: bacteria can live after four weeks on carpet. And, thanks to “microbial adhesion,” germs such as the following are immediately transferred to food: Salmonella typhimurium, Campylobacter, and Salmonella enteritis, a nasty bacterium that causes horrible diarrhea and vomiting.

4. Bed bugs can live in carpet fibers and wooden floorboards. For their size, they are extremely fast and can crawl more than 100 feet to obtain a blood meal, usually at night from people who are sleeping. Engorgement takes about three to 10 minutes yet people rarely realize they are being bitten.

5. A person sheds about 1.5 million skin flakes an hour, most of which becomes embedded in our carpets.

6. When properly cleaned and maintained, carpeting will improve the quality of air through trapping allergy-inducing dust and allergens. Most people, however, do not clean their carpets correctly, which can actually exacerbate allergies.

7. All carpet should be professionally cleaned a minimum of every 12 to 18 months.

QC Newsletter February 2015 - How to Choose a Professional Carpet Cleaner
