QC Newsletter - Happy Holidays!!!

Happy Holidays!

Here's some tips for those holiday mishaps!

Dye and Food Stains - Beverages, medicines, cosmetics, foods and other liquids containing dyes should be absorbed first. Then try the liquid dishwashing solution described in the wine remedy. Blot, repeat and rinse with clear water on a clean, white towel or white paper towel. Dry.

Blood - Rinse blood quickly with cool water. Follow with an approved cleaning solution or a mix of ¼ teaspoon clear (non bleach non lanolin) dishwashing liquid with one cup cool water. Blot and dry quickly.

Wine - Blot with white towel. Mix ¼ teaspoon clear (non bleach non lanolin) dishwashing liquid with one cup cool water.  Blot and dry quickly.  Alternatively, you can pour salt on wine, let it absorb then vacuum.

Urine or Vomit - If left unattended it can damage carpet in several ways. Always clean these up immediately with paper towels. For pet urine/vomit, try a solution of one part white vinegar and one part water. Blot with towel, repeat.

QC Newsletter November 2013 - Do It Yourself?

The holidays are just around the corner.  Are your carpets in need of a good cleaning? Maybe you are thinking you can do it yourself?  Let me share a true story with you....

A few years ago I was sent out to quote and clean a carpet for a client in Tualatin.  When I arrived, the client showed us the areas she wanted to clean.  She said that she has purchased the carpet about 2 ½ years ago.  Approximately, a year after the carpet purchase her and her husband decided to rent a machine and “do it themselves.”  When the carpet dried about 2 or 3 days later, they notice the the carpet didn’t look right.  The fibers felt different and had a slightly different color.  The called the retailer looking for answers to what had gone wrong.  They were referred to the manufacturer.  The manufacturer sent a carpet inspector to their home for a thorough inspection of the carpet.  He talked to the homeowners and asked then several questions about their carpet.  He informed them in his opinion the carpet cleaning equipment had frayed the fibers of the carpet and that he would send a report to the manufacturer of his findings.  They received a letter from the manufacturer stating that based on the carpet inspector’s report, the carpet was free of any manufacturer defects.  The carpet cleaning equipment that they had rented had caused permanent damage to the fibers.  Although, carpet warranties can last up to 25 years, their carpet warranty was now invalid after
only 2 ½ years!  The bristles from the carpet cleaning equipment had damaged their carpet and voided their warranty.  To avoid warranty issues, several major carpet manufacturers require using an IICRC certified firms to keep your carpet warranties valid.

Quick and Clean Services, LLC is an IICRC certified firm.  In addition, we also require our technician to be certified.  For us to keep our certifications valid, we must take continuing educations classes.

We believe that education is the key to success!

QC Newsletter November 2013 - Keeping Your Carpets In Tip Top Shape

Let us help you keep those carpets in tip top shape with these 6 easy tips!

Tip #1 Entry Mats - Entry ways are often the most heavily soiled areas of    carpet in the home.  The simplest yet most effective way to keeping these high traffic areas from becoming heavily soiled is to use entry mats.

Tip #2 Take Off Your Shoes - You can save wear and tear on carpet by     asking everyone to take off his or her shoes before entering your home.

Tip #3 Change Your Air Filters - Changing air filters in your heating and air conditioning systems as recommended by the manufacturer's directions.  The more dust and particles removed by the filter, the less that fall on the carpet.

Tip #4 Vacuum, Vacuum, Vacuum - Increase vacuum frequency.  Since  about 75% of carpet soil is dry particulate, vacuuming more often prevents      soil from embedding deep into carpets.  Vacuum heavy traffic areas slowly    and repeatedly.

Tip #5 Remove Spots Immediately - Spots that are not immediately removed can turn into permanent stains very easily.  Always use a spot cleaner that is recommended by the carpet manufacturer or your trained, certified professional cleaner!  Many “over the counter” spotters leave too much soap that leaves a sticky residue behind that will make your spots return!

Tip #6 Carpet Protectant - Next time you have your carpets cleaned asked us about carpet protectants.  The soil resistor that is built into stain resistant nylon carpet is removed with regular foot traffic and harsh cleaners.  To keep your carpet cleaner longer, have protector reapplied each time you have your carpet professionally cleaned.

QC Newsletter October 2013 - Vacuums Suck It Up

Vacuums Suck It Up

Considering about 80 percent of particulate in carpets is dry, the first principal of carpet care extraction is vacuum, vacuum, vacuum. “As far as we’re concerned, dry soil removal is the most important part of maintaining carpet,” says Tom Murphy, sales manager for RoVic Inc., Manchester, Conn. “The problem is most people don’t vacuum often enough.” To determine how often custodial workers should vacuum their carpets, Murphy recommends calculating the number of footfalls and the amount of traffic in the building. Dan Ott, co-owner of Facility Supply Systems Inc. in West Chicago, suggests that custodians vacuum carpets on a daily basis. “We want to make sure we’re vacuuming, even though the carpet may not appear dirty,” he says, “because once the carpet’s reached the point of appearing dirty, then it’s reached the restoration stage, and we want to put that off as long as possible.”That said, facilities vary in size and daily vacuuming can be challenging. With that in mind, distributors recommend regularly scheduled vacuuming on a rotating basis. “You don’t have to vacuum every square inch every day,” explains Ott, “but you do want to pay attention to high-traffic areas on a daily basis. For example, in a high-rise building on floors one through five, you might want to vacuum the entire floor on Monday and then focus on high-traffic areas for the rest of the floors. On Tuesday, you’d vacuum floors six through ten and just do hotspots on the other floors. No matter what, you’re going to get the entire building done in a week, maybe two, depending on its size.”Experts also advise training custodial workers to carry a carpet-spotting chemical with them when vacuuming. With chemicals handy, workers can address spots as soon as possible, reducing the possibility of long-term damage.  “The difference between a spot you can remove and a permanent stain is time,” says Ott. “The longer something stays on a carpet the more it becomes part of the carpet.”KASSANDRA KANIA is a freelance writer based in Charlotte, N.C. posted on: 5/1/2013

Stain Removal Tips

Dye and food stains - Such as beverages, medicines, cosmetics, foods and other liquids containing dyes should be absorbed first. Then rinse quickly with cool water, follow with an approved cleaning solution or a mix of ¼ teaspoon clear (non-bleach, non-lanolin) dishwashing liquid with one cup cool water. Blot, repeat and rinse with clear water on a clean, white towel or white paper towel.  Dry.

Fingernail Polish - This can be removed using a non-acetone fingernail polish remover. Apply a small amount of the removed on a white cloth and work it from the edges of the spill to the center. Blot the area using lukewarm tap water. Dry with a clean cloth.

Urine or Vomit - If left unattended it can damage carpet in several ways. Always clean these up immediately with paper towels. For pet urine, try a solution of one part white vinegar and one part water. Blot with towel, repeat.

Wax - (paraffin from candles) Responds best when medium heat from an iron is applied to a clean white cloth or paper towel, which Is place over the wax spill. Repeat the heat application to the towel as the wax is absorbed. Sometimes dyes in wax won't come out and fibers will have to be cut and the area replaced with a new carpet insert.

QC Newsletter August 2013 - What is the Best Carpet Cleaning Method?

What’s the Best Carpet Cleaning Method?

Should you go “dry” or “steam”, is one method better than the other?  Are these even the right terms?  This article will give you an overview of the 4 methods of carpet cleaning that are approved by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration
Certification (IICRC), the world’s most recognized body of certification for carpet and upholstery cleaners.

Method #1: Hot Water Extraction: Otherwise know as “steam cleaning,” hot water extraction is the process that most people are probably familiar with. Hot water extraction is the correct technical term, not steam cleaning. Actual steam is not used at all. A hot water solution is produced and immediately recovered, creating a “flushing” action on the carpet.

However, the biggest and most important difference is in the person cleaning the carpet. A trained technician will know what pressure to use, what cleaning products to use, how to get maximum soil removal and maximum spot removal without over-wetting the carpet or leaving a sticky residue behind. The horror stories of carpet being wet for days is due to operator error, not because “steam” or “hot water extraction” caused it.

Method #2: Absorbent Pad: Also known as bonnet cleaning, this method employs a round pad that spins across the surface of the carpet, absorbing the soil.  A solution is applied to the carpet or the pad to aid in releasing soils. This is a method that some may classify as “dry cleaning.”  Although, water based products are used in almost all “dry cleaning” systems, therefore the term dry cleaning is not technical and would not be desired. Absorbent pad cleaning is not a deep cleaning method. It should only be used in light soiled situations.

Method #3:  Dry compound: This method uses a powder that has been treated with detergents, water and solvents. The powder compound is sprinkled onto the carpet, a brush with cylindrical bristles is used to work the powder into the carpet pile. The solution that is in the powder releases the soil. The soil is then absorbed into the absorbent powder.  This method should only be used in lightly soiled and maintenance situations.

Method #4: Shampoo or Dry Foam: In this method, a shampoo or foam is generated and worked into the carpet with a rotary brush or cylindrical brush machine. The shampoo or foam releases the soil. The soil then vacuumed with the machine or allowed to dry and removed with a conventional vacuum cleaner. This method should be used in only lightly soiled situations and maintenance cleaning. When using shampoo, great care should be taken to avoid leaving a sticky residue on the carpet.

Please note to keep your Shaw or Mohawk carpet warranties valid you must have your carpets professionally cleaned every 12-18 months using hot water extraction and a certified firm/technician.

QC Newsletter June 2013 - Upholstery and Fabric Cleaning

Upholstery and Fabric Cleaning

To keep your furniture clean, it's necessary to conduct routine maintenance including vacuuming and immediate attention to spills, coupled with periodic cleaning by a certified technician every one to two years. Furniture and fabric manufacturers recommend that consumers not wait until severe soiling occurs before cleaning because the greater the soiling, the less the likelihood of restoring the fabric's original color, appearance and texture.

Regular cleaning of fabric and leather furnishings by a trained, certified technician can help restore your furniture's appearance, extend its life and keep it looking like new. Moreover, certified technicians can offer simple suggestions to maintain a clean and healthful home or business environment overall.

Tips For Prolonging The Beauty Of Your Upholstery

You just bought furniture for the living room, so how do you maintain  its fresh new appearance?

To keep your furniture clean, it’s necessary to conduct routine maintenance, including periodic cleaning by a cleantrust certified technician every one to two years. Furniture and fabric manufacturers recommend that consumers not wait until severe soiling occurs before cleaning because the greater the soiling, the less the likelihood of restoring the fabric's original color, appearance and texture, and the greater adverse effect on indoor environmental quality.

Regular cleaning by a trained, certified professional can help restore your upholstery's appearance, extend its life, and keeping it looking "like new." In addition, certified professionals can offer simple suggestions to maintain a clean and healthful environment.

 These tips often include:

Control soil by using arm caps and rotating seat cushions frequently to prolong life and appearance of areas prone to wear and tear. Remove dry soil by vacuuming and, depending on the fabric, brushing to remove dust and soil particles.  Increased cleaning may be required when fabric is subjected to heavy use, or when it is located in homes occupied with persons with allergies or respiratory sensitivity.

QC Newsletter May 2013 - Beware of Bait and Switch Carpet Cleaners

Beware of Bait and Switch Carpet Cleaners

You know the type - they “bait” you with a low price, then “switch” you to their “dual scrub” or “deep cleaning” system.  They proceed to soak your carpet and leave a soapy residue behind.

>>>>> Good luck getting them back again! <<<<<

Beware of low priced carpet cleaning.  If their price is truly low, you should be concerned about their quality.  How can you pay technicians a decent wage and have the best products and equipment at the lowest price?  You can’t.

Some companies advertise a low price, then charge you more when they get there.  Be clear about what is included and what is not.  Sometimes the fine print on a coupon will say something like ‘we recommend our dual scrub method for all heavily soiled carpet’.  How many carpets are heavily soiled?  All of them!  Even if you held them to the unbelievably low price, you would get a very poor cleaning.

Here are some questions to ask every carpet cleaner...

What method do you use?
Do you pre-spot urine and other spots?
Do you pre-spray the carpet?
Do you pre-groom the carpet?
Do you neutralize the carpet?
Do you post-groom the carpet?
Is all spot cleaning included in the price?
Do you give a free bottle of spot remover?
Do you have recent references?
How long have you been in business?
Are you certified by the IICRC?
Do you have liability insurance?

A low priced carpet cleaning company simply cannot provide the most advanced, guaranteed cleaning technology at a low, low price.  Something has to be cut from their service.

Our Company obviously offers all these benefits and more! Call today to schedule you Free Quote.

QC Newsletter April 2013 - New Addition?

New Addition?

Spring time seems to be everyone’s favorite time to add a new addition to the family.  No, we’re not talking about a new baby....

Well human baby this is.... We’re talking about a new PUPPY!

As wonderful as having a new puppy is, it can come with it’s owns set of headaches.  So here are some tips to help you out when puppy puddles are putting you in a particular predicament!

First of all, if you have a puppy that is prone to urinate on the carpet, take a quick walk through your home each day when you get home.  The quicker you get to a pet stain the better.

Some technical tips on urine:

When urine is first excreted, it is on the acid side of the pH scale and very easily removed.  Within hours of being exposed to oxygen it turns to an alkaline pH.  When this happens it will continue to increase in  alkalinity to the point of becoming practically ammonia.  This explains the ammonia like odor.

To clean the urine spot:
Mix 1 part white vinegar to 2 parts water and clean with a white terry towel.  If you have a small extraction machine, it would be ideal to use it.

QC Newsletter April 2013 - Spring into Cleaning

Spring into Cleaning

With April showers and May flowers come dust and pollen that can leave your home in desperate need of a seasonal makeover.  Spring cleaning may not be one’s idea of fun in the sun but here’s some tips to make cleaning a breeze.

1)  HVAC filters - Use quality electrostatic filters that attract particles to the filter.  To keep filters in top shape, clean once per month.

2)  Control moisture and humidity - Maintaining humidity at 50 percent or below prevents the growth of mold and the infestation of dust mites; two of the most common allergens.

3)  Increase vacuum frequency - Since about 75% of carpet soil is dry particulate, vacuuming more often prevents soil from embedding deep into carpets.  Vacuum heavy traffic areas slowly and repeatedly.

4)  Use high efficiency filter bags - High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) double lined vacuum filter bags filter out 99% of particles that cause respiratory irritation.

For professional cleaning jobs, look for an IICRC Certified Firm - Confirm their technician’s training and certification in the type of work to be performed and always obtain a written estimate.

QC Newsletter March 2013 - Tips from the IICRC

Tips from the IICRC:

New carpet can improve the appearance of any room, but how can carpet that is walked on every day continue looking new? To keep your carpet clean, it's necessary to vacuum regularly with a strong, well-functioning and properly-filtered vacuum cleaner. Unfortunately, due to traffic, children, pets and normal wear, carpet fibers inevitably become soiled, and a dull appearance results. And no matter how much you vacuum, eventually you will need to call a professional carpet cleaner.

Regular professional cleaning using a Cleantrust technician is as important to your carpet as having a trained mechanic perform routine tune-ups on your car. While your carpet may appear clean on the surface, periodic cleaning by a certified technician can remove what you can't see and help your carpet retain its fresh, beautiful appearance.

What is the proper way to deal with furniture indentations in carpet?

Indentations from furniture re-arrangement are a normal phenomenon in carpet.  Sometimes, the situation is self-correcting when the furniture is moved and the carpet backings and pile are allowed to re-acclimate.  In other cases, vacuuming coupled with light brushing can bring up the indented areas. In extreme cases, the indentation can be covered with a damp towel and steamed with an iron for a few seconds, followed by brushing while warm to "resurrect" the pile in that area.  Nylon carpet pile (about 70% of residential carpet) responds particularly well to this procedure.

There are, however, limitations by the type of pile fiber. If the pile is made of non-resilient olefin, as in olefin Berber or level-loop olefin commercial carpet, the indentation may be permanent. That's a characteristic of the fiber. This is why non-resilient olefin often is combined with resilient nylon in several popular carpet styles.

QC Newsletter February - Surfaces Conference 2013

Surfaces Conference 2013

Our technicians attended this conference at the end of last month. One of the things they learned about was the production of wool in the U.S.  They learned that wool is grown in all 50 states and there are 81,000 sheep farms and ranches.  American wool is versatile and is known for it’s “loftiness”  Also, it’s  used to make insulation, handmade rugs, tennis balls, bedding products and clean up pads for oil spills.

I bet you thought wool was for area rugs and coats only!

In the United Kingdom, Prince Charles started  “The Campaign for Wool” in 2010 to put wool back on the market.  He had noticed there was a decline in wool productivity.  This campaign is designed to improve the consumers understanding, appreciation and the sustainability benefits of wool.  The Prince is also a sheep farmer (yeah, that surprised all of us too!) and considers himself an environmentalist.  He brought together experts from  the industry from fashion/interior designers to carpet manufactures and architects.  Launching a plan to them to get the industry to work together and make wool fashionable once again.  The campaign has been very successful because it is based on a simply philosophy of supporting and encouraging  all levels of the wool industry.

The message is simple “Choose Wool”

When you think about it, wool is a green product and is sustainable because it uses the sheep's wool which grows back naturally after it’s been sheared.  A good quality wool carpet can last hundreds of years.  You can incorporate wool into your house many ways.  Wool runners, area rugs, blankets, mattresses, pholstered chairs, clothes and much more!

Happy New Year from the staff of Quick and Clean Services.
Here are some New Years carpet tips.

Tip #1 Entry Mats - Entry ways are often the most heavily soiled areas of
carpet in the home.  The simplest yet most effective way in keeping these high
traffic areas from becoming heavily soiled is to use entry mats.

Tip #2 Take Off Your Shoes - You can save wear and tear on carpet by asking
everyone to take off his or her shoes before entering your home.

Tip #3 Change Your Air Filters - Changing air filters in your heating and air
conditioning systems as recommended by the manufacturer's directions.  The more
dust and particles removed by the filter, the less that fall on the carpet.

Tip #4 Vacuum, Vacuum, Vacuum - Increase vacuum frequency.  Since about
75% of carpet soil is dry particulate, vacuuming more often prevents soil from
embedding deep into carpets.  Vacuum heavy traffic areas slowly and repeatedly.

Tip #5 Remove Spots Immediately - Spots that are not immediately removed
can turn into permanent stains very easily.  Always use a spot cleaner that is
recommended by the carpet manufacturer or your trained, certified professional
cleaner!  Many “over the counter” spotters leave too much soap that leaves a sticky
residue behind that will make your spots return!

Tip #6 Carpet Protectant - Next time you have your carpets cleaned asked us
about carpet protectant.  The soil resistor that is built into stain resistant nylon
carpet is removed with regular foot traffic and harsh cleaners.  To keep your
carpet cleaner longer, have protector reapplied each time you have your carpet
professional cleaned.
