QC Newsletter October 2009 - Unauthorized Coupon!

Unauthorized Coupon!

Quick and Clean Services, LLC started receiving phone calls last week regarding a coupon that was circulating in the local areas. We immediately knew something was incorrect when a potential customer told us of the “offers” printed on it.

Offer #1 - 3 Room Special $79.95
Offer # 2 - Carpet Cleaning 20% off
Offer # 3 - Upholstery Cleaning 20% off

The picture on the front of the coupon, a gentleman using Bonnet Cleaning equipment.

This is not our equipment or system!

We use a Hot Water Extraction, truck mounted machine with a titanium wand or RotoVac.

This coupon was sent out without our authorization and is completely invalid! Some companies will send out offers like “3 Room Special” but when they get to your home they will charge you for each individual spot or up sell you on a more expensive cleaning solution because your carpet needs “extra cleaning”.

We Do Not Operate in this Manner! Beware of companies that make claims like this and remember that age old saying “You Get What You Pay For”.

QC Newsletter October 2009 - The Importance of Carpet Cleaning

The Importance of Carpet Cleaning

Carpet cleaning is important! Carpet is a major investment in your home. Regular carpet cleanings are important to keep it looking good. Just as the clothes we wear need regular washing to keep them fresh and hygienic, so carpets require periodic professional carpet cleaning. When ccumulated soil builds up they become major causes of reduced carpet life.

Carpet cleaning costs are minimal when you consider the replacement cost of carpets and furnishings, so regular cleaning makes economic sense too.

QC Newsletter Sept 2009 - To Inspect or Not to Inspect?

To Inspect or Not to Inspect?

I recently had a customer call regarding a dog smell in his rental house. He told me he didn't want the carpet cleaned, only the odor treated. He made an appointment for Ale (our technician) to come and inspect the home.

When Ale entered the home it had a strong urine odor. Using a UV light and moisture probe inspection he found the carpet had urine in various spots throughout the house. In addition, he also thought the carpet had been recently cleaned but the carpet had stains coming back up. He said that the carpet needed urine treatment, deodorizing and a thorough cleaning.

I called the customer and told him what Ale had found during his inspection. The customer told me that he had another carpeting cleaning company come out and clean the carpet prior to our inspection. I told him that he should have the original company come back to treat the urine and reclean the carpet. He said he didn’t want them to come back because he felt the cleaner was too young and inexperienced. He asked us to treat, clean and deodorize the carpet.

My guess is that the previous company did not perform an inspection. They may skip this process because they think it is not important or they are not educated about carpet cleaning.

Always use a carpet cleaning firm that is certified and ask them if their employees are certified as well.

QC News July 09 - Removing the Top Ten Terrible Stains with Household Items

Removing the Top Ten Terrible Stains with Household Items

Blood - You should rinse quickly with cool water. Follow with an approved cleaning solution or a mix of ¼ teaspoon clear (non-bleach, non-lanolin) dishwashing liquid with one cup cool water. Blot and dry quickly.

Dye and Food Stains - Such as beverages, medicines, cosmetics, foods and other liquids containing dyes should be absorbed first. Then try the liquid dishwashing solution describe in the blood remedy. Blot, repeat and rinse with clear water on a clean, white towel or white paper towel. Dry.

Fingernail polish - This can can removed using a non-acetone fingernail polish remover. Apply a small amount of the remover on a white cloth and work it in from the edges of the spill to the center. Blot the area using lukewarm tap water. Dry with a clean cloth.

Ink - (ballpoint pen) Apply 70% isopropyl rubbing alcohol to a cloth or paper towel. Don’t pour rubbing alcohol directly on the spot.

Paint - Latex responds to the detergent solution described in the blood remedy. Blot, repeat and dry.

Urine or vomit - If left unattended it can damage carpet in several ways. Always clean these up immediately with paper towels. For pet urine, try a solution of one part white vinegar and one part water. Blot with towel, repeat.

Rust - Almost always requires professional services because of the chemical involved.

Wax - (paraffin from candles) Responds best when medium heat from an iron is applied to a clean white cloth or paper towel, which is place over the wax spill. Repeat the heat application to the towel as the wax is absorbed. Sometime dyes in wax won’t come out and fibers
will have to be cut and the area replaced with a new carpet insert.

Wine - Comes out with the same dishwashing detergent solution found in the blood remedy. Blot, repeat and dry.

QC News June 2009 - Do It Yourself? Beware!

Do it Yourself?.... Beware!

Are you thinking about cleaning the carpet yourself??
Let me share a true story with you….

About 2 years ago Ale (our technician) and I were sent out to quote and clean a carpet, for a client in Tualatin. When we arrived, the client showed us the areas she wanted cleaned. She said that she had purchased the carpet about 2 ½ years ago. Approximately, a year after the carpet purchase her and her husband decided to rent a carpet cleaning machine and “do it themselves.” When the carpet dried about 2 or 3 days later, they noticed that the carpet didn’t look right. The fibers felt different and had a slightly different color. They called the retailer looking for answers to what had gone wrong. They were referred to the manufacturer. The manufacturer sent a carpet inspector to their home for a thorough inspection of the carpet. He talked to the homeowners and asked them several questions about their carpet. He informed them in his opinion the carpet cleaning equipment had frayed the fibers of the carpet and that he would send a report to the manufacturer of his findings. They received a letter from the manufacturer stating that based on the carpet inspector’s report, the carpet was free of any manufacturer defects. The carpet cleaning equipment that they had rented had caused permanent damage to the fibers. Although, carpet warranties can last up to 25 years, their carpet warranty was now invalid after only 2 ½ years! The bristles from the carpet cleaning equipment had damaged their carpet and voided their warranty. To avoid warranty issues, several major carpet manufactures require using an IICRC certified firms to keep your carpet warranties valid.

Quick and Clean Services, LLC is an IICRC certified firm. In addition, we also require our technicians to be certified. For us to keep our certifications valid, we must take continuing education classes. We believe that education is the key to success!

Is Your Upholstery Really Clean?
Take the Test!

If you want to find out how much soil is actually on your upholstery that “looks” clean, simply take a white terry cloth towel and put it over the end of your vacuum attachment hose. Turn the vacuum on (be sure that you don’t let vacuum suck up the towel). Gently massage the fabric with the cloth. If a round dark spot appears on the towel that means there is embedded soil in the fabric. This is an indication that your upholstery needs a professional cleaning.

QC News April 2009 - Spring Into Cleaning

Spring into Cleaning

With April showers and May flowers come dust and pollen that can leave your home in desperate need of a seasonal makeover. Spring cleaning may not be one’s idea of fun in the sun, but the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) has a few tips to make cleaning a breeze.

* HVAC filters - Use quality electrostatic filters that attract particles to the filter. To keep filters in top shape, clean once per month.

* Control moisture and humidity - Maintaining humidity at 50 percent or below prevents the growth of mold and the infestation of dust mites; two of the most common allergens.

* Increase vacuum frequency - Since about 75% of carpet soil is dry particulate, vacuuming more often prevents soil from embedding deep into carpets. Vacuum heavy-traffic areas slowly and repeatedly.

* Use high efficiency filter bags - High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) double-lined vacuum filter bags filter out 99% of particles that cause respiratory irritation.

* For professional cleaning jobs, look for an IICRC-Certified Firm - Confirm their technician’s training and certification in the type of work to be performed and always obtain a written estimate.

QC Newsletter April 2009 - Electronics Recycling

Electronics Recycling
Electronics - Are you plugged in?

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Americans routinely replace their electronics every few years. When many people upgrade a computer, TV, or cell phone, they don’t feel right about putting these materials in the trash because they’ve invested their hard-earned money to purchase these products. Some electronics may be stored, while others are put in the trash. Get plugged in. Learn why these items should not be disposed, options for unwanted electronics, and which retailers participate in the EPA’s eCycle network.

Why:

Protect - Electronic devices contain a number of materials; some valuable (gold or platinum), others hazardous (lead or mercury). Proper handling of electronics minimizes potential negative impacts on the environment.

Conserve - Valuable materials from old electronics can be used to make new products, which reduce pollution and conserve natural resources.

Helps Others - Donating electronics in working order helps benefit those who need it, as well as creates recycling industry jobs and markets for the valuable, dismantled components.

Options:

Donate for Reuse - Contact local charities or refurbishers to determine where to bring your used electronics and what age/type of materials are accepted.

Recycle - Contact your local recycling center or Metro Recycling Information Center (503-234-3000) to learn about local community programs or collection events.

QC News March 2009 - Three Keys to Sucessful Spot Cleaning

Three Keys to Successful Spot Cleaning
Here are a few things to keep in mind when spotting your own carpet:

1. All spots are not created equal. All spots should not be cleaned with the same product. For example, urine spots that are dried should be cleaned with an "acid side" spotter due to the fact that the pH of urine changes within hours of drying. Oil or grease spots require a solvent-based spotter, and do-it yourself traffic area cleaning is best approached with a dry compound material, leaving just food and general spots for the general spotter.

2. Using the wrong product can actually cause a permanent stain. Many over-the-counter products are high in alkaline content and can actually "set" the stain. In addition, some tend to leave heavy residues that cause spots to re-soil quickly.

3. Spot cleaning is not a substitute for professional traffic area cleaning. Leaving traffic areas without professional attention for long periods of time will allow abrasive soils to damage carpet beyond repair. If you don't know how long it's been since you have cleaned your carpets, then it’s time!

In Seattle, there is a ceremony where a green stripe is painted down the roads.

Green is associated with St. Patrick’s Day because it is the color of Spring.

There are 22 gallons of beer consumed per capita by Americans annually. Some establishments offer beer dyed green in honor of St. Patrick’s Day.

St. Patrick’s isn’t a big drinking holiday in Ireland. In fact, many of the local pubs are closed for
the day.

QC News Nov/Dec 2008 - Top Ten Terrible Stains

Removing the Top Ten Terrible Stains

Blood - You should rinse quickly with cool water. Follow with an approved cleaning solution or a mix of ¼ teaspoon clear (non-leach, non-lanolin) dishwashing liquid with one cup cool water.

Sometime dyes in wax won’t come out and fibers will have to be cut and the area replaced with a new carpet insert.

Wine - Comes out with the same dishwashing detergent solution found in the flood remedy. Blot, repeat and dry.

QC News Nov/Dec 2008 - Is Your Home Ready for Winter?

Is Your Home Ready for Winter?

Here are some helpful tips to help you enjoy a safe,
inexpensive and warm winter season!

1. Make sure your furnace is in good working order. Clean your filters and check that the pilot light and fuel source are functioning properly.

2. Check the caulking around your windows. Heat loss due to cracks can cause sever heat loss, while raising your utility bills dramatically.

3. Clear your gutters of leaves & branches. Trapped water will freeze in the cold, and with enough build-up, could damage your gutters, roof and more.

4. Make sure your chimney is free of debris. Build-up can prevent proper ventilation of smoke, as well as pose a fire danger for your home.

5. Prevent your pipes from freezing and rupturing by maintaining at least a 65F degree temperature in your home, even when you’re not there.

6. Have your heating ducts cleaned. It’s recommended that the ducts be vacuumed every 5 years.

QC News Feb 2009 - New Years Resolution

TAKE BETTER CARE OF MY CARPET

With the new year comes new resolutions. Have you felt like you have neglected your carpet? Maybe even felt a little guilty? After all, you wouldn’t drive your car for 100,000 miles without changing the oil, would you? Of course not. Just like your automobile, your carpets and upholstery represent a significant investment. To keep your carpet and upholstery “tuned-up”, simply follow these 5 vital steps…

1. Check my Warranty. Copies of specific warranties on your carpet purchase may be available
from your carpet retailer. Stain resist warranties can vary from 5 to 20 years. ALL STAIN RESIST
WARRANTIES REQUIRE REGULAR CLEANING AND IMMEDIATE SPOT REMOVAL.

2. Vacuum, Vacuum, Vacuum! It is said that the three most important rules for maintaining carpet
are vacuum, vacuum, vacuum. Vacuum your carpet often. Once or twice a week at least. Vacuuming removes the sharp soil that can cut and slice the fiber causing premature wear. Much of this soil is not visible to the eye. Remove any loose particles such as loose food, leaves, pieces of crayon, bugs, etc. These items can cause spots on your carpet.

3. Have my Carpet Professionally Cleaned. Professional cleaning by a professional, certified firm should be done at least every 12 months according to DuPont and major carpet manufacturers.
Heavy traffic areas may need it more often. Manufacturers warranties require professional cleaning at 12-24 months to retain texture retention warranties. Rule of thumb: Clean your carpet before it looks visibly soiled.

4. Remove Spots Immediately. Spots that are not immediately removed can turn into permanent stains very easily. Always use a spot cleaner that is recommended by the carpet manufacturer or your trained, certified professional cleaner! Many “over the counter” spotters leave too much soap residue that leaves a sticky residue behind that will make your spots return!

5. Have Carpet Protector Re-Applied The soil resistor that is built into stain resistant nylon carpet is removed with regular foot traffic and harsh cleaners. To keep your carpet cleaner longer, have your protector reapplied each time you have your carpet professionally cleaned.

QC News Feb 2009 - Run Spot, Run! - Puppy Puddles!

What should you do when your pet “goes on the carpet”? Are puppy puddles putting you in a particular predicament? Well, not to worry, that’s what we are here for.

First of all, if you have a pet that is prone to urinate on the carpet, take a quick walk through your home each day when you get home. The quicker you get to a pet stain the better.

Some technical tips on urine: When urine is first excreted, it is on the acid side of the pH scale and very easily removed. Within hours of being exposed to oxygen it turns to an alkaline pH. When this happens it will continue to increase in alkalinity to the point of becoming practically ammonia. This explains the ammonia like odor.

To clean the urine spot: Mix 1 part white vinegar to 2 parts water and clean with a white terry towel. If you have a
small extraction machine, it would be ideal to use it. Do not use over the counter spot removers or all purpose cleaners on urine! You may set the spot permanently! If you have trouble removing it, call us.

If you are experiencing odor problems as a result of having pets in your home, give our office a call for a free evaluation of the situation. We can advise you of the best course of action.
