QC Newsletter November 2011 - Do it Yourself?

Do it Yourself?.... Beware!

Are you thinking about cleaning the carpet yourself??

Let me share a true story with you...

A few years ago I was sent out to quote and clean a carpet for a client in Tualatin. When I arrived, the client showed us the areas she wanted to clean. She said that she had purchased the carpet about 2 ½ years ago. Approximately, a year after the carpet purchase her and her husband decided to rent a carpet cleaning machine and “do it themselves.” When the carpet dried about 2 or 3 days later, they noticed that the carpet didn’t look right. The fibers felt different and had a slightly different color. They called the retailer looking for answers to what had gone wrong. They were referred to the manufacturer. The manufacturer sent a carpet inspector to their home for a thorough inspection of the carpet. He talked to the homeowners and asked them several questions about their carpet. He informed them in his opinion the carpet cleaning equipment had frayed the fibers of the carpet and that he would send a report to the manufacturer of his findings. They received a letter from the manufacturer stating that based on the carpet inspector’s report, the carpet was free of any manufacturer defects. The carpet cleaning equipment that they had rented had caused permanent damage to the fibers. Although, carpet warranties can last up to 25 years, their carpet warranty was now invalid after only 2 ½ years! The bristles from the carpet cleaning equipment had damaged their carpet and voided their warranty. To avoid warranty issues, several major carpet manufactures require using an IICRC certified firms to keep your carpet warranties valid.

Quick and Clean Services, LLC is an IICRC certified firm. In addition, we also require our technicians to be certified. For us to keep our certifications valid, we must take continuing education classes. We believe that education is the key to success!

QC Newsletter November 2011 - Prescription Disposal

East Precinct opens permanent drop box for prescription drugs

Do you have unused or expired medications that you don’t know how to dispose of? Flushing them down the toilet can pose the hazard of entering our water system.

A permanent prescription drug disposal box is now available!

The new drop box is at the Portland Police Bureau's East Precinct at 737 SE 106th Avenue. It's in the lobby and is available for use during regular business hours, which are currently 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Police already hold prescription drug turn-in events but this will be available on a regular basis so the community can readily dispose of pills. The medications that are put in the box will be incinerated, which is standard police protocol.

According to the Portland Police Bureau the new drop box will serve two purposes - helping in at least a small way to prevent teenagers from having access to unused and expired medications and also to protect the environment.

Here’s Some Reasons Why You Want Clean Carpet!

QC Newsletter August 2011 - Bait and Switch

Beware of Bait and Switch Carpet Cleaners!

You know the type - they “bait” you with a low price, then “switch” you to their “dual scrub” or “deep clean” system. They proceed to soak your carpet and leave a soapy residue behind!

>>>>>Good luck getting them back<<<<<

Beware of low priced carpet cleaning. If their price is truly low, you should be concerned about their quality. How can you pay technicians a decent wage and have the best products and equipment at the lowest price? You can’t.

Some companies advertise a low price, then charge you more when they get there. Be clear about what is included and what is not. In some ads, the fine prints says “we recommend our dual scrub method for all heavily soiled carpet”. How many carpets are heavily soiled?
All of them! Even if you held them to the “$34.95”, you would get a very poor cleaning.

Here are some questions to ask every carpet cleaner about their company and their cleaning process...

What method do you use?

Do you vacuum the carpet?

Do you pre-spot urine and other spots?

Do you pre-spray the carpet?

Do you use air movers to speed the drying process?

Is all spot cleaning included in the price?

Do you give a free bottle of spot remover?

Do you give a free pair of booties?

How long have you been in business?

Are you certified by the IICRC?

Do you have liability insurance?

Do you use sub contractors or employees?

A low priced carpet cleaning company simply cannot provide the most advanced, guaranteed cleaning technology at a low, low price. Something has to be cut from their service.

Our company offers all these benefits and more!

QC Newsletter June 2011 - Interiors: Carpet Cleaning A Must For Healthy Air

Interiors: Carpet Cleaning A Must For Healthy Air

Like all things in the home, carpets need cleaning. Vacuuming often helps keep the carpet clean, but it also needs a more thorough, professional cleaning on a regular basis. Twice a year is ideal, particularly if you have children and/or pets. Once a year is the recommended.

Did you know that indoor air quality is usually 10 to 100 times worse than outdoor air quality? Getting the carpet professionally cleaned not only helps the appearance of the carpet but is beneficial to our health as well.

Carpets act as a filter that holds soil, dust mites, pollen, debris and other contaminants. Vacuuming helps pull up a good amount of that but not all.

A dirty carpet is the ideal place for bacteria and germs to multiply and grow. Sounds like a horror film, but think about it: Doctors tell us that dirt and dust are the primary causes of most allergies. Over time, the contaminants will build up — and you can imagine what all that will do to your health as you daily breathe in those nasty microorganisms. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also recognizes the effect of unhealthy indoor air and the link it has with carpet cleaning.

Routine maintenance of your carpet not only helps to keep indoor air clean, it also extends the life of the carpet.

While waiting in between professional cleanings, be sure to change the filter in your vacuum often.

On a side note, if you are selling your home, be sure to have the carpet professionally cleaned before that first open house. A dirty carpet can turn buyers off, and if there are pet, smoke or other odors in the carpet, many buyers will walk out before viewing the rest of the house.

QC Newsletter July 2011 - What's the Best Carpet Cleaning Method?

What’s the Best Carpet Cleaning Method?

Should you go “dry” or “steam” Is one method better than the other? Are these even the right terms? This article will give you an overview of the 4 methods of carpet cleaning that are approved by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), the world’s most recognized body of certification for carpet and upholstery cleaners.

Method #1: Hot Water Extraction: Otherwise known as “steam cleaning”, hot water extraction is the process that most are probably familiar with. Hot water extraction is the correct technical term, not steam cleaning. Actual steam is not used at all. A hot water solution is produced and immediately recovered, creating a “flushing” action on the carpet.

However, the biggest and most important difference is in the person cleaning the carpet. A trained technician will know what pressure to use, what cleaning products to use, how to get maximum soil removal and maximum spot removal without over-wetting the carpet or leaving a sticky residue behind. The horror stories of carpet being wet for days is due to operator error, not because “steam” or “hot water extraction” caused it.

Method #2: Absorbent Pad: Also known as bonnet cleaning, this method employs a round pad that spins across the surface of the carpet, absorbing the soil. A solution is applied to the carpet or the pad to aid in releasing soils. This is a method that some may classify as “dry cleaning”. Although, water based products are used in almost all “dry cleaning” systems, therefore the term dry cleaning is not technical and would not be desired. Absorbent pad cleaning is not a deep cleaning method. It should only be used in lightly soiled situations.

Method #3: Dry Compound: This method uses a powder that has been treated with detergents, water and solvents. The powder compound is sprinkled onto the carpet, a brush with cylindrical bristles is used to work the powder into the carpet pile. The solution that is in the powder releases the soil. The soil is then absorbed into the absorbent powder. This method should only be used in lightly soiled and maintenance situations.

Method #4: Shampoo or Dry Foam: In this method, a shampoo or foam is generated and worked into the carpet with a rotary brush or cylindrical brush machine. The shampoo or foam releases the soil. The soil is then vacuumed with the machine or allowed to dry and removed with a conventional vacuum cleaner. This method should be used in only lightly soiled situations and maintenance cleaning. When using shampoo, great care should be taken to avoid leaving a sticky residue on the carpet.

Please note to keep your Shaw or Mohawk carpet warranties valid you must have your carpets professionally cleaned every 12-18 months using hot water extraction and a certified firm / technician.

QC Newsletter May 2011 - New Addition?

New Addition?

Spring time seems to be everyone's favorite time to add a new addition to the family. No we’re not talking about a new baby... Well human baby that is... We’re talking about a new PUPPY!

As wonderful as having a new puppy is, it can come with it’s own set of headaches. So here are some tips to help you out when puppy puddles are putting you in a particular predicament!

First of all, if you have a puppy that is prone to urinate on the carpet, take a quick walk through your home each day when you get home. The quicker you get to a pet stain the better.

Some technical tips on urine:
When urine is first excreted, it is on the acid side of the pH scale and very easily removed. Within hours of being exposed to oxygen it turns to an alkaline pH. When this happens it will continue to increase in alkalinity to the point of becoming practically ammonia. This explains the ammonia like odor.

To clean the urine spot:
Mix 1 part white vinegar to 2 parts water and clean with a white terry towel. If you have a small extraction machine, it would be ideal to use it.

QC Newsletters April 2011 - Removing Spots and Stains

Removing Spots and Stains

Step One: Absorb the spill
Blot liquids with a dry, white absorbent cloth or plain white paper towels (no prints or colors). Use of a printed or colored material may transfer ink or dye to your damp carpet!

Start at the outside of the spot and continue toward the center to prevent the stain from spreading. Blot until barely damp. Semi-solids like food spills may need scooping up with a spoon. Solid, dried bits can be vacuumed up.

WARNING!!! Do not scrub! Scrubbing can damage the carpet because fraying and texture change is the likely result. Use a soft white cloth to blot the spot.

Step Two: Treat the spot or stain
Use a CRI Seal of Approval carpet spotter. Check out www.carpet-rug.org for a list of Seal of Approval spot removers and cleaning solutions. Make sure to add one to your shopping list before an emergency arises. Though these have been laboratory tested, make sure you have pre tested any cleaner on a hidden area of your carpet.

Follow the product’s directions carefully. Generally speaking, apply a small amount of the cleaner to a white cloth and work in gently, from the edges to the center. Blot: don’t scrub. You may need to do this serveral times to remove the spot.

What if your don’t have a CRI approved carpet cleaning handy? Try one of these home-made remedies:

Plain Water: Water often works better than untested carpet spotters

Detergent solution: Mix ¼ teaspoon of a clear (nonbleach, nonlanolin) dishwashing liquid with 1 cup warm water. Try this own spilled wine and smeared chocolate. Never use laundry detergent: it may contain bleach or simply be too harsh.

Use a white vinegar solution: Mix 1 cup white (not red wine or cider) vinegar with 1 cup water. White vinegar (5 percent acetic acid) is sometime effective on tannin (weak vegetable dye found in tea and coffee), and it leaves no residue. However, be careful because acids can set some other dye stains.

QC Newsletters April 2011 - Spring into Cleaning

Spring into Cleaning

With April showers and May flowers come dust and pollen that can leave your home in desperate need of a seasonal makeover. Spring cleaning may not be one’s idea of fun in the sun, but the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) has a few tips to make cleaning a breeze.

HVAC filters - Use quality electrostatic filters that attract particles to the filter. To keep filters in top shape, clean once per month.

Control moisture and humidity - Maintaining humidity at 50 percent or below prevents the growth of mold and the infestation of dust mites; two of the most common allergens.

Increase vacuum frequency - Since about 75% of carpet soil is dry particulate, vacuuming more often prevents soil from embedding deep into carpets. Vacuum heavy-traffic areas slowly and repeatedly.

Use high efficiency filter bags - High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) double-lined vacuum filter bags filter out 99% of particles that cause respiratory irritation.

For professional cleaning jobs, look for an IICRC-Certified Firm - Confirm their technician’s training and certification in the type of work to be performed and always obtain a written estimate.

QC Newsletters March 2011 - Unseen Danger

UNSEEN DANGER
The House Dust Mite

The causes and effects of allergies have long been known and can be a serious health threat. Still allergies seems to be on the increase. They are an unwanted response of the immune system resulting in inflammation of the eyes and nose (rhinitis), lungs (asthma) and skin (eczema). It is estimated that allergies affect some 40% of the population at some time and the percentage is on the increase.

One controllable culprit in the battle with allergens is the house dust mite, a microscopic insect which is found in our indoor environment. The bedroom is particularly vulnerable for allergy sufferers as we spend one third of our life in bed and a good deal of other time dressing and preparing for the day. We shed skin (which is food to the dust mite) into our sleeping environment collected by the linens, pillows, mattress and carpet. All these areas are ideal breeding grounds for the dust mite.

It is the dust mite waste, and not the mites themselves, that triggers asthmatic and allergic attacks. Research has revealed this trigger is a microscopic protein in the mite excrement called Der pl.

The mites’ droppings are coated in an enzymatic slimy substance, which after drying become mixed with other particles forming household dust.

Mites live on carpets, pillows, upholstered furniture, blankets, mattresses, in the air handling system, etc.

Dust Mite Facts

* The average dust mite is 0.5 mm long, not visible to the naked eye. Over 7,000 can fit on a fingernail.

* A dust mite molts several times during its life producing 200 times its weight in waste and will lay 300 eggs.

* Each mite produces 40 to 100 feces pellets per day.

* Dust mites are among the most common causes of asthma.

QC Newsletter Jan/Feb 2011 - Got Dirty Carpet?

GOT DIRTY CARPET?

Do you ever feel like you neglect your carpet? Maybe even felt a little guilty? After all, you wouldn’t drive your car for 100,000 miles without changing the oil, would you? Of course not. Just like your automobile, your carpets and upholstery represent a significant investment. To keep your carpet and upholstery “tuned-up”, simply follow these 5 vital steps:

1. Check Your Warranty. Copies of specific warranties on your carpet purchase may be available from your carpet retailer. Stain resist warranties can vary from 5 to 20 years. ALL STAIN RESIST WARRANTIES REQUIRE REGULAR CLEANING AND IMMEDIATE SPOT REMOVAL.

2. Vacuum, Vacuum, Vacuum! It is said that the three most important rules for maintaining carpet are vacuum, vacuum, vacuum. Vacuum your carpet often. Once or twice a week at least. Vacuuming removes the sharp soil that can cut and slice the fiber causing premature wear. Much of this soil is not visible to the eye. Remove any loose particles such as loose food, leaves, pieces of crayon, bugs, etc. These items can cause spots on your carpet.

3. Have Your Carpet Professionally Cleaned. Professional cleaning by a professional, certified firm should be done at least every 12 months according to DuPont and major carpet manufacturers. Heavy traffic areas may need it more often. Manufacturers warranties require professional cleaning at 12-24 months to retain texture retention warranties. Rule of thumb: Clean your carpet before it looks dirty.

4. Remove Spots Immediately. Spots that are not immediately removed can turn into permanent stains very easily. Always use a spot cleaner that is recommended by the carpet manufacturer or your trained, certified professional cleaner! Many “over the counter” spotters leave too much soap residue that leaves a sticky residue behind that will make your spots return!

5. Have Carpet Protector Re-Applied. The soil resistor that is built into stain resistant nylon carpet is removed with regular foot traffic and harsh cleaners. To keep your carpet cleaner longer, have your protector reapplied each time you have your carpet professionally cleaned.
