QC Newsletters December 2017 - Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays from Quick & Clean Services LLC

Here’s some helpful tips for spills during your holiday season

Dye and Food Stains - Beverages, medicines, cosmetics, foods and other liquids containing dyes should be absorbed first. Then try the liquid dishwashing solution described in the wine remedy. Blot, repeat and rinse with clear water on a clean, white towel or white paper towel. Dry.

Blood - Rinse blood quickly with cool water. Follow with an approved cleaning solution or a mix of ¼ teaspoon clear (non bleach non lanolin) dishwashing liquid with one cup cool water. Blot and dry quickly.

Wine - Blot with white towel. Mix ¼ teaspoon clear (non bleach non lanolin) dishwashing liquid with one cup cool water.  Blot and dry quickly.  Alternatively, you can pour salt on wine, let it absorb then vacuum.

Urine or Vomit - If left unattended it can damage carpet in several ways. Always clean these up immediately with paper towels. For pet urine/vomit, try a solution of one part white vinegar and
one part water. Blot with towel, repeat.

QC Newsletter November 2017 - Four Steps For Proper Carpet Care

Four Steps For Proper Carpet Care

Carpet cleaning is just like exercise! If you get into a routine and keep it up, you will see great    results and feel better for it. Products that rate highly on CRI’s Seal of Approval (SOA) program  are your assurance that you will clean correctly the first time.

Here are four simple steps to keep your carpet clean and looking great:
Vacuum high traffic areas daily and everywhere according to a vacuuming schedule, using a Seal of Approval-certified vacuum.  Clean spots and spills quickly with products that do not damage the carpet or cause it to resoil quicker.  Professionally deep clean your carpets every 12 to 18 months to remove embedded dirt and grime.  Stop dirt at the door by using mats outside and inside.  Also, taking your shoes off when you enter the house and changing your air filters will reduce airborne dust particles.

The Seal of Approval Program
CRI wants vacuums, extractors, cleaning systems and cleaning products to be as effective as  possible. The Seal of Approval program is the only one in the industry that scientifically measures cleaning efficacy. The results help consumers make informed decisions, and manufacturers improve their products. So carpets are cleaner, healthier and last longer.

Basic Rug Care
Rugs deserve the same care as wall-to-wall carpet and, in some cases, require special attention.

Washing rugs — If your rug is small and the label says “machine washable,” shake the rug        outside first and then put it in the washing machine at the recommended temperature. Use warm water  (90 to 105 degrees) and a mild detergent. Tumble your rug dry at the lowest heat setting.

Beating larger rugs — If your larger rug is easy to pick up, shake it outside first; then put it over a clothesline and beat it. Next, take the rug inside and vacuum it. Many carpet cleaning professionals have rug cleaning expertise as well, but, if the label says dry clean only, do not attempt to clean it! Take it to a professional!

Vacuuming area rugs — Area rugs with fringe require special technique. Use gentle suction and start from the center of the carpet, vacuuming toward the fringe and being careful not to catch the strands in the beater bar. Lift the carpet edge to vacuum beneath the fringe.

Caring for Oriental, Turkish or Persian rugs — Clean imported rugs according to your carpet manufacturer’s specifications or bring in a professional cleaning service. Be gentle with fringe. For heirloom-type rugs, you need professionals.

QC Newsletter November 2017 - Benefits of Carpet and Rugs

Benefits of Carpet and Rugs

Improves Indoor Air Quality

New carpet is the lowest VOC-emitting  flooring choice available. It actually acts as   a passive air filter, trapping dust, pollen and other particles.  Removing them from the breathing zone. Studies have shown that people with asthma and allergy problems have seen symptoms improve with carpet.

Provides Warmth and Comfort

Carpet provides actual thermal resistance,  or R-value. In colder climates or seasons, it retains warm air longer, an energy conservation benefit. Carpet also provides a comfortable place to sit, play or work and gives a room an overall warmer feeling.

Softens Slips and Falls

Carpet is ideal for cushioning our footsteps, reducing slips, falls and minimizing injuries when falls do occur. Carpet provides safety protection for the whole family, but especially for toddlers and older individuals.

Reduces Noise

Big screen TVs, speaker phones, computers and modern sound systems make our homes noisy places. Carpet helps absorb these sounds. Adding a cushion pad beneath your carpet reduces noise even further. Carpet also works as a sound barrier between floors by helping to block sound transmission to rooms below. Also, carpet on stairs helps mask the sound of constant foot traffic.

Hard Surface Cleaning

In today’s home decor, hard surface  flooring is playing an increasingly important role.  Examples of popular flooring material include stone, concrete, ceramic/clay, wood, resilient and specialty flooring.  These materials appear to be easy to clean, maintain and restore, however, soils on hard surface flooring have a tendency to build up progressively, resulting in erosion.  Sooner or later, it’s necessary to clean beyond routine dusting and damp mopping; that’s the time to call in a certified professional for help.

QC Newsletter October 2017 - Carpet and Furniture Last Longer with Fabric & Fiber Protection!

Carpet and Furniture Lasts Longer with Fabric & Fiber Protection!

This application assures you of the best protection possible against resoiling and stains. Maxim Fiber Protection has two protective properties. The first is an acid dye blocker that is basically a clear dye that fills the extra dye sites in a fiber. This helps to keep “foreign” dyes (such as red dye in a beverage) from penetrating the carpet fiber. The second property is called a “fluorochemical”.
It is commonly known as 3M Scotchgard® or DuPont Teflon®. This treatment helps keep spillage
from actually getting to the acid dye blocker, but its biggest job is to resist dry soil.

By resisting dry soil, less soil bonds to the carpet; therefore, more soil is being picked up by your vacuum. Making sure that you have a sufficient amount of protector on your carpet will help keep the soil from bonding to the carpet. Once it bonds to the carpet, it acts like sandpaper on your traffic area. Once the traffic area yarns are broken down, there is no way to bring them back to their original state.

Bridgepoint’s Maxim Fine Fabric Protector can be applied to just about any type of furniture fabric
including delicate fabrics such as silk. We can protect new or just cleaned furniture. Bridgepoint’s Maxim Fine Fabric Protector has a special carrying agent that will not water mark delicate fabrics. Once the product dries, it will leave a layer of protection that will help the homeowner maintain furniture with ease.

Six Reasons You Should Always Get Carpet Protector:

Reduces permanent stains. A great looking carpet can be ruined by an ugly spot. Unprotected carpet doesn’t repel spillage as well as protected carpet. Protector will allow you to remove spots and spills more effectively, therefore helping you to avoid permanent staining.

Helps save your traffic areas from becoming destroyed. Traffic area soil is very abrasive and cuts carpet yarns like a knife. This damaging soil can easily bond to an unprotected carpet. By applying protector, you will increase the life of your carpet dramatically. When you vacuum your protected carpet the soils will release from the carpet pile much more effectively.

Make spots easier to remove. The easier a spot is to remove, the less cleaner you will have to use. The less agitation you will have to use, and the less time it will take. Many spots can be removed easily with just water.

Makes your next professional cleaning more effective. Having protector applied to your carpet will enhance your next cleaning. More soil will be removed the next time your carpeting is professionally cleaned.

Helps avoid costly service calls. Although you want to call us to handle any spot you cannot remove immediately, carpet protector helps you remove more spots than you could without protector. You may be able to save a minimum charge by removing the spot yourself.

Your carpet will look better and last longer when it is protected

QC Newsletter August 2017 - Tips for Hardwood Floor Care and Maintenance

Tips for Hardwood Floor Care and Maintenance

Like any floor covering, factory finished wood floors will show signs of wear overtime, depending on the size and lifestyle of your family. By observing a few precautions and setting up a regular cleaning routine and maintenance program, you can expect years of beauty from your hardwood floor.

Sweep or vacuum regularly since built-up grit can damage the surface of the wood. The vacuum head must be a brush or felt type. Be certain the wheels of the vacuum are clean and do not damage the finish. Do not use a vacuum with a beater bar head.

Do not use oil soaps, liquid or paste wax products, or other household cleaners that contain citrus oils, lemon oil, tung oil, silicon, or ammonia.

Keep pets nails trimmed and paws clean and free of dirt, gravel, grease, oil, and stains.

Place protective felt pads beneath furniture legs and feet to reduce scratches and dents. Replace pads as needed.  Also, use a dolly and protective sheet of plywood when moving heavy objects, furniture or appliances.Remove shoes with spiked or damaged heels before walking on floor.Exposure to the sun and its UV rays accelerates the oxidation and aging of wood. This can cause the wood stain and/or wood to fade and/or to change color. We recommend that you rearrange rugs and furniture periodically so the floor ages evenly.

Use area rugs in high-traffic areas and pivot points. For example, stairs, landings, room entries, etc, especially if you have a large family or indoor pets.

Lastly, every 18-24 months your hardwood floors should be professionally cleaned to restore it’s original beautiful finish.  This is done by our thorough process that involves a deep cleaning and optional top coat finish.  This process protects the original stain and if done periodically will keep you from refinishing or replacing your floors in the future. QC Newsletter July 2017 - Is Bleach Cleaning Your Carpet a Good Idea?

Is ‘bleach cleaning’ your carpet a good idea?

If you walk into any carpet retailer up and down the land you will find posters, stickers and labels proclaiming that certain ‘stain proof’ carpets are ‘bleach cleanable’. There are even images on sample books and in magazine advertising  showing pictures of children on carpets together with an image of a bottle of bleach. So, is cleaning your carpet with bleach a good idea? Well, consider the following facts and make your own mind up.

Bleach can damage the carpet backing and sub-floor.

When carrying out spot removal not all the cleaning solution will remain on the carpet’s surface, some will soak down to the backing; this is especially true of polypropylene carpet. So, even if the carpet’s face fiber is tolerant to strong    chemicals, as the bleach migrates down the pile it can damage the carpet backing and underlay. If tracked around it may also damage the fiber and strip color from other, non-polypropylene carpet in your home.

Bleach is hazardous, especially to children and pets.

Bleach remains active unless it is ‘neutralized. Do you know how to neutralize bleach? The vast majority don’t. If your pet comes into the home with wet feet and walks over, or sits, on the area that has been treated with bleach they could potentially suffer chemical burns. If babies crawl over and/or children play on the carpet, why would you put them at risk?

Bleach is bad for your respiratory system.

All the while you are leaning over a spill and cleaning it with a bleach solution you are breathing it in. Bleach is bad for your lungs and causes other side effects including skin burns, damage to the nervous system, asthma flares, headaches, migraines and vomiting….remember it was used in WWI as a weapon. If you can smell it then it is doing you harm!

Bleach is bad for the environment.

Bleach pollutes the air and water supply, accumulating over time. It is consumed first by micro-organisms which serve as food for larger species and then as you continue up the food chain each species accumulates an ever increasing level of toxins.

Bleach is not even a good cleaner!

Although a fairly good disinfectant, bleach has no detergency and is therefore no more effective at cleaning than water.…. it smells pretty bad too!

QC Newsletter May 2017 - Three Reason to Get Your Carpets Cleaned

Three Reasons to Get Your Carpets Cleaned

1.  Your home will look beautiful!  You can keep an environment your family and friends will enjoy being in.  Your carpet strongly reflects your entire home.  Half of the first impression is based on the appearance of your carpet and floors.  Stain-free carpet leaves a great first impression.

2.  You’ll save money by your carpet lasting longer!  Maintenance is always cheaper that replacement.  Carpet and rug manufacturers recommend professional cleaning at least every 12 months.  In fact, many carpet warranties require IICRC certified professional cleaning at least every 12 -18 months or your warranty is void. Proper cleaning helps carpet last much longer.

3.  You’ll have a healthier home!  The EPA (Environment Protection Agency) recommends homes with children or pets have carpet cleaned every 6-12 months.  Proper cleaning actually  improves the health of your home by removing pollens, mold spores, dander, pollutants and soils.

QC Newsletter May 2017 - The Real Reason Why Your Tile, Grout and Floors Get So Dirty!

The Real Reason Why Your Tile, Grout and Floors  Get So Dirty!

Mopping is the primary problem. Yes, mopping and cleaning should be done regularly but the cleaning has to be done properly.  The biggest mistake is using too much floor cleaner with no rinse.  Believe it or not, too much floor detergent causes a build up that actually makes your floors look dirtier.

Rinse your floor!  Every second or third cleaning, you  should clean your floors with pure water.  Avoid vinegar because vinegar can break down any sealants that may be applied grout or floor.

What about your dirty grout?

Those little lines between your tile can be difficult, if not near impossible to mop thoroughly.  The grout lines dip down below the tile, which causes your mop to never come in contact with the grout.

Using a brush to clean in the grout lines may be required for severe soil build up.  However, brushing each grout line can be VERY time consuming.  One alternative is using a floor machine that’s designed to brush the tile and extract the dirty water.  This can be more beneficial then mopping.

How to Keep Your Tile and Grout Sparkling Clean

The best preventative measure to help your grout clean up easily is to have a professional grout sealer applied.  This is something that “should” be done immediately after installation, however most tile installers don’t do it for you.  The lack of grout sealer and improper grout sealer is a big reason why grout gets so dirty.

You’ll get sparkling clean tile and grout when we deep clean with our high pressured  extraction system.  Call today for a FREE estimate!

QC Newsletter April - Keep your house cleaner by parking shoes at the door!

Keep your house cleaner by parking shoes at the door

If you could do one simple thing to have a cleaner house, carpets that look like new, and less bacteria in your home, would you do it? All you have to do it remove your shoes before coming into the house.

Growing custom

More and more Americans are making a habit of kicking off their shoes at the door. This is a common practice in Hawaii as a way to keep sand out of the house, and widely popular in Asia. As Asian decorating and customs grab hold here, more and more homeowners now ban wearing shoes in the house.

More than just a nicety or custom, removing your shoes before entering a home makes good sense. After you tromp around city streets, buses and trains, public restrooms, stores, stairwells and countless corridors each day, your shoes collect bacteria and debris, which you then track inside. The dirt and germs get trapped in carpets.

EPA findings

If you're still not convinced that wearing shoes in the house carries hazards, consider these findings from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In 1991, the EPA conducted a "Doormat Study" to measure the amount of lead dust in homes. The results showed that in homes where a doormat was added at the entrance and shoes were banned indoors, the incidence of lead dust and other chemicals in the home fell about 60 percent. Not only that, but in homes where shoes are removed, there was also a reduction in allergens and bacteria being tracked into the house.

What's more, dirty shoes soil carpets. Over time, heavily trafficked areas can become so saturated with dirt that they develop dark "lanes." Small stains can also spread over time.

Floor cleaning

In addition to banning shoes in the house, have your carpets steam cleaned once or twice a year, and avoid carpet cleaners that use surfactants (soap). Even some professional carpet services use soap-based cleaners. These products attract more dirt and actually make carpets dirtier faster. Choose carpet cleaning products recommended by the Carpet and Rug Institute (http://www.carpet-rug.org).
Be sure to vacuum once or twice a week, and use a vacuum with a HEPA filter or vacuum bag to trap lead dust and other chemicals or allergens. Place good quality doormats by every entrance to help trap dirt and debris.

By making some simple changes you can have a cleaner home - and even cleaner socks!

QC Newsletter March 2017 - What's Lurking In Your Carpet?

What’s Lurking In Your Carpet? A Spring Cleaning Guide.  DEATH TO THE MITES.

It’s time for spring cleaning, hooray! Homeowners everywhere are dusting off the shelves, cleaning out the closet and making sure all the kitchen Tupperware is nicely stacked in order.

But please, OH please, do NOT forget the carpet. Your carpet is bacteria’s favorite playground.

We don’t want to over-dramatize the situation but the fact is your carpet is a hotbed of bacteria, pollen, dead skin and dust.  Robin Wilson is an interior designer with a focus on hypoallergenic homes. She says that bringing outdoor debris inside can turn problematic, since you could unknowingly introduce pathogens that get trapped in your carpet.

Imagine, for instance, if your dog steps in feces at the dog park and tracks it into your home. You could have illness-causing germs like e. Coli in your carpet without even knowing it. Pretty gross, right?

Indeed, microbiology research published in 2001 found an average indoor carpet to be about 4,000 times dirtier than a toilet seat, with about 200,000 bacteria per square inch, Men’s Health reports. And THAT is certainly something to think about.

But the main risk here isn’t bacterial infection... it’s allergies.  So THAT’S why you have the sniffles.

Outdoor debris from clothing and shoes works deep into carpet fibers, creating a “reservoir of allergens“ that can adversely affect nearly 40 percent of Americans, the National Center for Healthy Housing notes.

These allergens — like pollen and dust — can cause respiratory issues and wheezing when they get kicked into the air, Wilson says. While sniffles aren’t life-threatening, living in constant discomfort is certainly irksome.

Then there are the thousands of dead human skin cells, which, when shed, become primary food for dust mites, according to the National Center For Healthy Housing. Carpets can also trap pet hair, which tickles the nose and is just plain gross. So what should you do about all this?

Vacuuming is crucial — but usually not enough.

Vacuum your carpet at least weekly to keep critters under control, Wilson says. Every six months to a year, get it deep-cleaned with a professional service.

Note the word “professional” here.        Numerous experts, including Wilson, stress that at-home carpet cleaning systems are NOT the way to go. They  often leave a layer of moisture which Wilson  refers to as “mold central.” People who are allergic to mold can suffer from stuffed noses, irritated eyes, wheezing, or skin irritation, according to the CDC.

Wilson recommends getting a deep clean during your spring cleaning routine, and another just before the holidays so your home will be ready for guests. Between appointments, be sure to vacuum weekly and use a hand-held vacuum on areas where pets tread every couple of days.
This will ensure your home stays springtime fresh, ALL year long.

Happy cleaning!

QC Newsletter March 2017 - Random Facts About Carpet Cleaning

Random Facts About Carpet Cleaning

1. The Norwalk virus or Norovirus (the virus that causes the stomach flu) can survive on an uncleaned carpet for a month or more

2. Microbiologists have identified air blown from a running vacuum cleaner as one of the five places in the home that has the highest numbers of germs. Other places include dish sponges, washing machines, bathroom toilets during a flush, and kitchen trash cans.

3. The five-second rule is a myth: bacteria can live after four weeks on carpet. And, thanks to “microbial adhesion,” germs such as the following are immediately transferred to food: Salmonella typhimurium, Campylobacter, and Salmonella enteritis, a nasty bacterium that causes horrible diarrhea and vomiting.

4. Each year, several pounds of soil can accumulate in and under a carpet

5. A person sheds about 1.5 million skin flakes an hour, most of which becomes embedded in our carpets.

6. All carpet should be professionally cleaned a minimum of every 12 to 18 months.

7. Club soda is effective in getting up fresh stains in carpet. Just pour some on the spot, let it set for a few seconds, and then sponge it up.

8. To raise depressions in the carpet left by heavy furniture, hold a steam iron close enough for steam to reach the carpet, but don’t let the iron touch the carpet. Lift fibers by scraping them with edge of a coin or spoon

QC Newsletter February 2017 - Indoor Air Quality

Indoor Air Quality

For many, spring is a rebirth of life and time to rejuvenate the home with a thorough cleaning. The IICRC reminds consumers that a quality cleaning regimen can be good for their health by enhancing the indoor air quality of the home.

A survey conducted by the IICRC found that more than eight out of 10 U.S. homeowners feel their family’s health is    directly related to the cleanliness of floors in the home. The survey results, in conjunction with other similar findings, also discuss a long-standing misperception that carpet is the least effective type of flooring when it comes to minimizing conditions that aggravate allergies. In reality, the opposite is true. Scientific studies have shown carpet to be more effective in trapping allergens keeping them from becoming airborne inside the home. The key is proper cleaning.

The IICRC offers 10 tips for simple clean-up to improve indoor air quality:

Keep Walkway and Entries Clean – Start by keeping outside sidewalks, entry areas, porches and steps clean. Sweep, dust, vacuum or use a leaf blower to remove soil and debris from entries to eliminate tracking into the facility.

Use Mats to Trap Soil at Entries – Outside and interior mats to trap and contain particles and moisture should be placed at each entry. This not only extends the life of carpet, it greatly reduces the quantity of particles that enter and build up within traffic areas, eventually becoming airborne.

Clean Shoes at Entries – Studies conducted by professional engineers on carpet dust samples indicate that fine particles containing lead are reduced by cleaning or removing and leaving shoes at the entry.

Purchase and Use High Quality Vacuum Equipment – A quality, durable upright vacuum with brush agitation is a must. Price is not as important as quality. Check trade or consumer magazines and expect sales persons to provide technically accurate information. Also, check the Carpet and Rug Institute’s list of vacuums that qualify for the Green Label Program at www.carpet-rug.org.

Use High Efficiency Vacuum Filter Bag – Using high-efficiency double-lined vacuum filter bags can filter out 99 percent of particles down to one micron or less in size. Avoid cheap paper filter bags that remove particles down to seven microns only. Small particles that pass easily through paper filter bags are a major source of respiratory irritation, as well as household dust.

Vacuum Frequency – Consumers should increase the frequency of vacuuming to stop soil from sifting downward and becoming embedded in the carpet pile. Vacuuming should be done more slowly in entry areas where most particle soils accumulate. Vacuum slowly over traffic areas two or three times.

Heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) Filters – Use quality pleated or reusable electrostatic filters for HVAC systems.  Reusable filters have acrylic rods that vibrate and create a static electricity that charges soil particles, thereby attracting them to the filter. Anticipate a cost of between $50 and $100 for quality filters. Reusable filters should be removed and flushed free of collected soils on a monthly basis.

Clean the Carpet – Professional hot water extraction cleaning lifts and suspends fine particles of soil. Then careful extraction flushes them from carpet fibers.

Clean Other Soft Surfaces – Clean upholstery, drapery, bedding and other fabric surfaces regularly; wash linens weekly to remove allergens.

Control Moisture and Humidity – Dust mites and mold are the two most common allergens present in higher humidity climates. Dust mite infestation can be eliminated if the relative humidity of a home/building, not just a particular area, is consistently maintained below 50 percent.
